Northern Soul is about as useful as Britpop as a definition of a type of music. I don’t understand how you can dislike something so nebulous

What’s that saying about pornography? It’s hard to define, but you know it when you see it.  Northern soul is a bit like that, isn’t it? I had a scouse mate who was well into it (NS I mean, not bongo mags). So I heard loads of it and would sort of describe it as the dancier end of soul music, but that’s a crap description.

I like some soul music, and some NS, but not much of it.

Here's the thing with Northern Soul, the original NS DJ really got to dislike the whole scene quite quickly. It was none other than Roger Eagle, who was the original DJ at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester, he often said, he was sick of calling ambulances for all the speed freaks and he found the whole scene quite limiting as he couldn’t play the range of music he wanted to. He moved on from it

By the end of the 60s he was heavily into the underground psyche scene, by the 70s he moved to Liverpool and was running The Stadium, helped set up Probe Records and opened Eric’s the legendary punk club

I worked for him for a while in the 80s, mainly back in Manchester at The Ritz

Anyway, I'm wobbling way off the subject here.

Roger Eagle, an absolute legend.

Northern Soul just fast and obscure R&B that Roger used to play for speed freaks at all nighters

My nipper has just worked an NS all nighter shift in Worcester of all places.

Negatives:

they kept throwing talc around even after being asked nicely not to.

they kept leaving fag butts in the planter outside after being asked nicely not to.

they talked absolute shite at anyone that didn’t walk away all night and through to the morning.

they mostly just bought water or asked for tap water.

Positives:

on a break, stood outside, my nipper saw a badger bumble by.

The World War Z movie. It’s absolute crap right?

The book is amazing. I think a series with an independent episode made out of each chapter of the book has the potential to be the best series of all time.

But the movie is actually **** brilliant. The bit in Israel where they are praying so loud that all the zombies climb over the walls. Then they escape on a plane but of course there’s a zombie on the plane! Then Peter Capaldi is there. It’s **** terrible. It’s **** brilliant.

I genuinely enjoyed it. Thought it was the best headline performance since Radiohead's in 2017 (Radiohead are probably another unpopular opinion in and of themselves 😂)

Yes, indeed ... a dedicated former Radiohead fan here. I saw them in 2000 at Royal Festival Hall for Kid A, and the swarms of nonconformists at that concert were so utterly off-putting to me, I could never stand to hear Radiohead again. Their music makes my skin crawl now. I might as well have been through the Ludovico technique. I preferred RH when they were refashioning the Hollies, etc.

Sorry, thought this was widely known.

Last week, we found out that Radiohead was suing Lana Del Rey over allegedly plagiarizing their classic song, ‘Creep’.  Now, it turns out that ‘Creep’ itself might be a total rip-off of a song from the early 1970s.

If you’re just tuning in, welcome to the latest copyright face-off in the music industry.  This time, Radiohead has accused Lana Del Rey of stealing their song, ‘Creep,’ on her recently-released ‘Get Free’.  The track is from Del Rey’s latest album, Lust for Life.

The most worrying thing here is citing Creep, of all songs, as the reason for being a Radiohead fan in the first place. It's not even the best song on Pablo Honey.

I can appreciate not liking a band because of their fans though. There's plenty of bands I have that issue with...

I’d say John Belushi in terms of what the hell is everyone seeing here? You ever seen that Saturday Night Samurai character he did? Tiresome.

And, leaving aside the music (which I know is a big part of the film), I simply don’t get the blues brothers. As a supposedly comedic film, what are the funny bits meant to be?

Unless the thinking was just “You know what’s funny - car crashes! Let’s just do that all the way through the film.”

Fawlty Towers was never funny.

I would challenge anyone to watch Fawlty Towers for the first time and not find it funny.

It was brilliantly written and there are so many moments of absolute genius.

Prunela Scales acting is sublime.

Nearly 50 years after it was shown we still use "Basil Fawlty" and "Fawlty Towers" to describe poor hotels and rude staff.

I can't accept that challenge as I have watched it, I did not enjoy it, too close to farce for me. I would go as far as to say, for me, its one of the worst comedies. That's just personal taste though.
