Things I Don't Get. How the hell Banshee isn't a far more lauded/known show than it is. I think the name makes people think it's supernatural in nature or something and they avoid it on that basis. Funnily enough the guy who made it also made Warrior which would also give you a wrong impression. Maybe he's just a great writer but shit at naming things.

Banshee has been on my list to watch for ages but every time I've checked it's not been available on Prime, Netflix or Disney.

Also, based off the first 4 words you posted then you're possibly in the wrong thread.

I can see how if you approach the Sopranos, The Wire, or BB now, years after the hype and go in expecting one of the all time great shows you'll have had expectations built up so high that they start to fall flat, but they're all absolutely brilliant.

This is correct.

I know I’ve said before, I watched Breaking Bad when it was on Five USA or some similar freeview channel. They basically played the first two seasons over a couple of weeks. Snuck away at 10:30pm. They didn’t show any more - my guess is the rights became too expensive for them.

Anyway, my expectation going in was “Oh the dad from Malcom in the Middle is in it? Yeah I’ll give it a go, might be fun…”. My expectations definitely were not this is considered one of the best ever shows. If I did have that lofty expectation, my opinion of it probably wouldn’t be as high.

I think by the time Netflix got involved the hype train had left the station so it would have had a lot more to live up to for those going in at that point.

I did watch The Sopranos towards the end of its run. Can’t remember exactly but I think BBC two had every episode every night in the lead up to (or just after) the final season. Now I knew The Sopranos was considered to be extremely good, but I was under the impression that it had tailed off after the first few seasons. So again, my expectations were tempered.

And I really didn’t notice a drop off in quality.

I was the exact opposite. I'd never seen MitM, so I had no idea who Cranston was. But I'd heard all the hype about BB, including the premise of the plot, and decided "Nah, don't fancy it". But the missus wanted to give it a chance, so we watched ep 1. Hmm, OK, we'll try one more. And we were hooked. Binged all the way to the end.

Banshee is mental. In a good way! I watched it based on a recommendation on here. I loved it.

I thought it was channel 4 who showed the end of the sopranos and I think they might have put the final 6 episodes or whatever it was on e4 too, for all the hype it has now the end of the sopranos on UK TV was not prime time, it was slipping further and further down, I seem to think it was on at like 11pm on a Wednesday night too, it went with little fanfare

Sopranos was pretty solid throughout imo, finished strong, didn't suffer too badly from one and done protagonists like some other terrace winter series (it definitely has them though) at its core when they seemed to be struggling with the gangster side of it around series 4 they had some really strong carmela stuff

BBC did a run of the wire late night and that's what I seem to remember being multiple episodes per week

Might have been channel four, I remember it being BBC but it was something like sixteen years ago so I can’t be sure. I remember recording them (not on tape, a dvd player with memory thing) so I wasn’t watching them live, as it were.

I have no real memories of the original run being shown on terrestrial television, I know it was but I can’t say “Oh it was on at this time, on this day of the week”. I just remember hearing it was a cut above everything else.

I never watched Seinfeld, but I do remember a regular complaint from devotees of the show, who’d write for the radio times and the like, about why it never really had a settled place in the schedules that they felt it deserved, like both Friends and Frasier both had.

Or when Seinfeld did have a more consistent allotted time, why they chose 11:30pm on a Sunday or whatever it was and no one watched it.

US comedies are about as funny as being castrated.

In fact, i cant stand any US TV shows. The couple ive seen started off ok then go too "American" with ridiculous plot lines, awful dialogue and crappy car chase type scenarios. One was El Chapo and the other was Narcos I think.

As an aside, anything with Will Ferrell in it should be banned as a crime against comedy.

I disagree with all of that, but to the bolded bit:

If you can watch his SNL audition tape and not at least give a smile, I’d be almost impressed.

There IS a lot of poor stuff. Comedy that relies too much on stupid stereotypes no one really cares about or even understands. But situation comedies in general are fading and have been for years, and with the strike now, it's all on hold. OTOH, I'm hardly impressed with either countries' comedic output in the last few years. British comedy seems definitely past its golden or even tin age. I think in both countries, a new generation of comedy writers will eventually emerge. Offending people is easy, but doing it meaningfully and artfully to comedic effect takes talent and practice.

Yes, and the Roxbury Guys skits -- still funny after decades ...

I can definitely see why someone would think this. I think a lot of his stuff is very stupid and, yes, geared towards a different audience shall we say. His signature manic shouty outbursts where louder is supposed to equal funnier in some people's eyes can be jarringly cringeworthy. But he has been in some stuff worth watching. And if you can't bring youself to watch one of the good comedies like The Campaign or the original Anchorman, and other watchable stuff (IMO) like The Other Guys or Stepbrothers, then definitely watch Everything Must Go, where he plays a straight role.

I vaguely remember enjoying Stranger Than Fiction where Ferrell plays it as a bit more of a straight role in what could easily have been a much broader performance.

It’s been years since I watched his films. I remember thinking that he was typically better in films that he hadn’t written - Anchorman being the exception to that rule. I feel that generally I prefer the big performances in smaller cameo roles. Something like Wedding Crashers, he comes in, is a fairly ridiculous character, way bigger than anyone else in the film but is amusing, then is off the screen before the joke wears thin.

Like Robin Williams or Rik Mayall, obviously very talented. Just needs someone to manage the chaos.

I've never watched it , but when i lived in Hungary they launched their own version called Való Világ

After a few weeks in the house they arranged for a porn star to visit the house  , the inevitable happened and one of the inmates got in bed with her .... followed about 40 seconds later by the Hungarian equivalent of "I'm sorry , but its been a while"

porn star left the house next morning ... followed in the afternoon by another new guest ... the long term girlfriend of the man who just shagged a porn star live on TV

I understood less than 1 % of it ,  but it was great viewing

America's best funnies are animation.

'The Simpsons', 'South Park', 'Archer', 'Mr Pickles', 'Rick & Morty' and 'Moral Orel' have been outstanding and they approach comedy from different directions.
