His Dad and Uncle both died racing too apparently.  It's one of those things I will never get my head around.

They did indeed.  Joey Dunlop (the uncle) is one of the greatest and most revered motorcycle racers that has ever lived.

  • 2 weeks later...

The passing of Harlan Ellison on 28/06/18 completely passed me by, somehow. His work was almost entirely unlike anything else I have ever read. Horrifying, thoughtful, funny and unkind in equal measure. My personal favourite short would probably be Pretty Maggie Moneyeyes.

Possibly most famous for a computer game based on the unforgettable 'I have no mouth and I must scream', writing an award winning early episode of Star Trek (OS), and providing the 'inspiration' for The Terminator, or perhaps infamous for things like being fired by Disney on his first day int he job...as well as being a bit of a bastard.

Don't think he ever did write the novelised version of Boy and his Dog...

Yeah, this is the first I've heard about his passing. Good writer.

was reading about him a few weeks back ( prob when he died) .. didn't really know a lot about him but  the Star trek episode thing was a strange one as he sorta distanced himself from it as they changed his ending , told evberyone it was crap and yet happily accepted the award ....

Yes, that's right. It's one of the most famous instances of him being a bit...obtuse? Although he was well within his rights to do so.

I recall reading that at some of the more raucous Trekie conventions (what events they must be!) they sometimes put on dramatised performances of the behind the scenes events of that episode (which is a cracker from what I recall), with Ellison being an almost diva-esque character referring to Roddenberry as an 'Art Defiler'.

Ellison had a very, very long history of taking various persons to court, and once said he wouldn't take a piss without checking he was getting paid first, or words to that effect. He also had an uneasy relationship with his fans, and detested being told what he should write, going so far as to write follow up stories to popular ones and killing off the characters so he wouldn't be bothered by fans pandering to him for sequels. I think he was married 5 or 6 times too.

Interesting dude.

There was a piece on R4's Last Word obit programme this week.

They said the change to his Star Trek episode was that ST wouldn't have a drug pusher on board, he'd figured a crew that size there would be someone peddling drugs. But the ST team decided they wanted at least a chance of a second series and re wrote it.

His sacking on his first day at Disney Studios occurred a few hours into his first shift. In the cafeteria, he joked with some of his new colleagues that they should animate a porno starring the most famous Disney characters up to that point. He then proceeded to act out various scenes, and provided the voices - which he was quite good at.

Unfortunately, Roy Disney was sitting at the next table, listening to every horrifying detail as he desicrated his family's work. Within minutes he was out the door.

seems like prince phillip has roared off into the atmosphere, free to call the stars a bunch of speckly layabouts.

Fake news I think.
