NurembergVillan Posted May 9, 2017 Moderator Share Posted May 9, 2017 We need to start having the conversation about whether there's ever been a better defender than Giorgio Chiellini too. Except for God, obv.

Popular Post Dr_Pangloss
Chiellini and Bonucci are the last of the dying breed that is the 'proper' defender. Will be a sad day when they both retire.
rodders0223
I remember watching Chiellini many a year ago thinking what an horrificly limited LB he was..

villa4europe
he was probably on around £200k a week a barca, maybe more barca have a tiny squad, im not sure if some of their mega stars are earning a bit too much and stretching them to breaking point

I think he wanted to leave, plus Juve look after their older players financially and physically. They are very generous, makes a mockery of all the times Wenger lost a player because he would only offer over 30s one year deals.

He wanted a two year deal and Barca only wanted to give him a one year deal, genius decision.

VillaChris
Milan was a dads army a few years back....Maldini, Favalli, Stam, Costacurta, Rui Costa, Crespo, Shevchenko and Inzaghi were all in their 30s when they come the CL in 2007.

Popular Post lapal_fan
Chiellini has been very solid for a long time now - He'll go down as a really good defender. Bonnuci has come to the fore in recent seasons, but for me, Chiellini has been better over a longer period. A few seasons ago Jube fans were calling for Bonnuci to go! And @Genie & @Xela, that's the reason I follow/support Milan - Seedorf, Nesta, Maldini, Costacurta, Beckham, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Pirlo, Gattuso etc etc - all in their mid 30s in a time when players got to 30 and were dropped from the teams in the PL/La Liga. You just can't beat class very often. Reason I'll be absolutely gutted when Buffon and Totti stop - the last of the generation of players that really were superstars when I was 12/13 (the last bit of that magical childrens age).
sne
Juve are quite brilliant at signing players on a free (wages not included of course) Cannavaro, Luca Toni, Coman, Pogba, Khedira, (Neto), Llorente, Pirlo, Dani Alves...

You are not wrong. 2006 world cup all star team. It really is the end. Gianluigi Buffon Jens Lehmann Ricardo Roberto Ayala John Terry Lilian Thuram Philipp Lahm Fabio Cannavaro Gianluca Zambrotta Ricardo Carvalho Zé Roberto Patrick Vieira Zinedine Zidane Michael Ballack Andrea Pirlo Gennaro Gattuso Luís Figo Maniche Hernán Crespo Thierry Henry Miroslav Klose Luca Toni Francesco Totti
VillaChris
Maniche looks really out of place in that list! I was going to say Luca Toni aswell but he had some brilliant club seasons for Fiorentina.

Dr_Pangloss
For me Baresi is the greatest ever Italian centre half.

Nothing phased him. Fast, strong, tall, read the game well, led great teams. But for a couple of nasty injuries, he'd have been even better.
