Villa Park redevelopment

So with the latest comments from Keith Wyness on WM, apparently he's very busy at the moment working on plans with people on the redevelopment of the surrounding area of Villa Park. He even said that the plan is to make it "like a 2nd city centre to be used Monday to Friday". That is very ambitious indeed when you look at the current state of Aston.

I'd love to see the area developed but I don't see what it would bring for the club, obviously better transport links are needed for any capacity expansion but having a nicer surrounding aera - I don't get why Keith would be busy with this as its not technically Villa related.

We would probably have more pubs to go to.

Yeah but if we don't own that land (didn't Doug sell it off?) Then I don't see how any of the surrounding businesses would create revenue for Villa on non match days?

Villa own all the land at the back of the North Stand. Doug sold the serpentine car park (behind aston tavern, next to the old leisure centre), which has now been redeveloped into a industrial estate. Its a massive piece of land ripe for development in the second biggest city in the country, with the commonweallth games and HS2 project coming up. Could all be very interesting in the next 5-10 years.

After today's result I like to think Tony's removed the dust sheet and is moving the little buses around on his scale model of VillaLand.

Before saying "Baja? I don't own anything in Baja!"

Building some kind of complex around the stadium if done right can bring in an absolute ton of money.

The Atlanta Braves moved to a new stadium last season, with a huge complex built around it with all the usual amenities. It bought in an additional $100m on Turner Field the season before. The attendance did go up a tick, from 24k average to 30k average, but that does not account directly for the huge revenue jump.

Imagine Star City, but better and with the added bonus of a Premier League club playing there 20+ times a season. On top of that we should be looking to subsidse the rail links if necessary, get extra trains on, a free shuttle bus service, get people there early and keep them there.

I'd certainly love the option to pop for a nice meal after the game, to a bar or bowling or to the cinema etc etc. It could be the making of us.

It also might help with the horrendous traffic getting out of Villa Park if the leave at the end of the game is staggered with some staying on site for 1-2 hours afterwards.

This might be a little controversial and apologies if I offend anyone but the location of Star City has had a big impact on how desirable it has become to visit. Something similar in Witton would probably suffer the same fate.

Star City suffers from an image problem and an accessibility problem. Both issues would undoubtedly need to be tackled head on for any new development.

This is why he's talking about developing the whole area.

Aston adjoins The Gun Quarter and the areas around Aston University.  These areas are undergoing massive redevelopment and in turn adjoin the city centre.

Develop Aston and you have "nice" areas all the way from Villa Park to the city centre.

I'm not so sure about this whole pleasure leisure thing. They created resorts world by the NEC and I've never seen it busy.

Anyway who goes Star City when you've got Costco next door. My 2nd favourite place after Villa Park.

one of the first partnerships the doctor signed us up to was with resorts world, could be something behind the scenes making sure we dont step on any toes (or even that they conspired to send a casino less star city under  )

the hotel, restaurant, casino idea only works if they can bring in people who stop over in the area, im sure resorts world dont struggle if there is a massive convention or gig on

Villa would need to do the same, we'll have match day (but do we really bring in the tourists?) we would need some office developments and international businesses in the area first

Sounds far fetched but tony may have been serious about the theme park. You could put a Legoland or similar in and people would definitely come. Even a shopping centre with a rollercoaster on the roof would work. I’d be there!

Yeah I must admit I don't think i'd ever go to something like this in Aston, unless they completely transformed the area. Just as I avoid Star City.

But a lot of people WOULD, that's the important thing.

I have.

Not heaving, but definitely busy.

But that's in a much more desirable location than Aston.

They would need to sort out the transport links around the area too

Yeah this is true.

By far the worst thing about going to watch Villa is getting away from the ground.

It's not so bad for a 3 o'clock Saturday kick off. But an evening kick off is shit.

Absolutely agree, the midweek games are horrendous thats why attendances i feel generally are poor midweek.

But some Saturdays have been equally as bad the Ipswich game took over 2hrs to get back to new street. I am sure this will be looked at. how can Villa Park be extended in a few years to 50k lets say for example with the existing transport links in place.

Evening games I've given up getting the train.

My first train from Aston (to Sutton Coldfield) is impossible to catch unless you leave the game early. The next one isn't for half an hour and more often than not is too full to get on. And the one following is another half an hour.

So you can easily end up stood on the platform for an hour.

I went to a Real Madrid game last year. I know it's a totally different city and club, but i couldn't believe how easy it was to get to the ground and away from it afterwards despite there being 80,000 people there.
i'm not saying we can do the same, but comparing the experience of going to a game when it's easy to get to and from the ground is significant.
