Davkaus
Imagine that. An analysis, for the benefit of our Brexit negotiators, many of whom are partly educated, and the writers felt the need to clarify some of the general uses of electricity. They've been written just so that someone can say they've been written. They've let us see the section that was delegated to a work experience student, but hidden anything about the actual impact, for reasons known only to the Committee. And Little Brexiters talk about enemies of of the people. This government is an enemy of democracy. Edited December 22, 2017 by Davkaus
HanoiVillan
Well, you can't argue with it, can you?
peterms
I can sympathise with Mr Davis' difficulty in saying whether sectoral analyses had been produced. There are clearly papers which are described in that way, but are they actually analyses? In what way to they meet the criteria of being an analysis rather than a series of words arranged into sentences? It's a tough one, and no mistake. Davkaus
Sectoral analysis, also known as sectorial analysis, is a statistical analysis of the size, demographic, pricing, competitive, and other economic dimensions of a sector of the economy.
LondonLax
There is a school of thought that says the blue passport will be a sop to the Brexitiers and will help smooth over a Brexit where the UK remains in the single market. It pretty remarkable though that the UK government is this far along in negotiations and no one still has any idea what model it is they are negotiating in favour of.

peterms
Since the people who care about having blue passports are those who don't use them because they don't ever go abroad, why not have an imitation passport for them, maybe with a choice of four or five pantone numbers so they can choose their favourite shade of blue, and an actual passport for everyone else. chrisp65
I'm hearing that the new blue passport will also have some sudoku in the back to help pass the time in the non-EU queue at airports.
Davkaus
The government knows it's bollocks, but decided to cater to the simpletons anyway... https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/blue-passports-brexit-colour-change-leave-eu-withdrawal-european-union-countries-travel-a8124526.html Quote The Government could have changed the colour of British passports back to blue at any time regardless of Brexit, it has emerged. Theresa May described the decision to revert to the “iconic” colour as an “expression of our independence and sovereignty” away from the EU. But the Home Office confirmed that the UK voluntarily adopted common passport criteria from the European Economic Community (EEC) and was not obliged to keep it. The guidance states that the cover of member states’ passports should be “burgundy red” and stipulated features including the number of pages and information that must be included. An EEC resolution drawn up in the 1970s hoped the move would “strengthen the feeling among nationals of the member states that they belong to the same community” and facilitate their movement. A Government source told The Independent the agreement was not legally binding and that redesigns have been considered around every five years. “But changing to blue would have looked odd, whereas now it doesn’t look that odd,” he added. Croatia notably refused to change the dark blue colour of its passports after joining the EU in 2013, with the interior minister telling local media: “The EU’s position is that there is no obligation.” To be fair, civil servants knowing the facts doesn't mean that our ministers do - after all, they seem to pride themselves on their ignorance. I've found exclusive footage of David Davis being told that we could have changed the passports at any time, and kicked out any EU citizens who couldn't financially support themselves:
peterms
One feature of negotiations is that you seek to establish good faith and build rapport, because it helps in reaching agreement. When our politicians pull stunts like the colour of passports, seeking to make people believe the lie that the current colour is required by the EU and only by leaving can we choose, then it will make our negotiating partners exasperated and impatient, as well as making them believe we do not act in good faith. In other words, it weakens our negotiating position.

I think a colouring book would be more apt, sudoku is a bit too challenging a thing to do whilst in the queue at Alicante-Elche airport. It’s a power protection game now and nothing else. They know there’s another GE coming fairly soon (IMO) and they’ll do whatever it takes to hold on. The outcome of Brexit is secondary to staying in power. This whole passport thing has just shone a further light on the motives behind the vote to leave. I’ve tried to find reason in it all, tried to find some rationale in leavers thinking, but it really is a big pile of racist, xenophobic shite. They could for example have said that when we leave, we will need to use passports without "European Union" on them, and we will take the opportunity of producing new passports to return to the colour that some people prefer. What is so frustrating about the lie is that it is unnecessary - unless the aim is to feed the unreasoning resentment of the EU, without caring that the lie is so easily exposed. That would be a very curious position, but I suppose given their general approach, you wouldn't put it past them.
