I just feel for us on the left we should always be the champion of peoples sexuality and free speech.

That sounds more 'libertarian' than 'left'.

It wasnt any Labour MP's who accused him of watching things so vile and offensive  he should lose his job, it was his fellow Tories.

The idea of nodding along to right wing puritans hounding people out of their jobs is anathema to the left. Free speech and expression and peoples sexual freedom is exactly what the left I was brought up with were all about.

Watching porn at work with other people present isn’t a left versus right issue. it’s pretty basic human decency or its mental health.

It’s also absolutely nothing to do with sexual orientation.

If you’re ok with people obviously watching porn at work, you need to recalibrate where you’re red lines are at.

It’s not puritanical for me not to want to see you watching porn when we are both in the office. Sexual freedom does not extend to people having to accept me showing them porn in the workplace. That’s a pretty skewed view of left versus right.

Yeah but where does watching porn whilst at work fit in?

It's possible to think that the above is perfectly fine, and also think that you probably shouldn't be doing it while being paid to listen to the minister for rural affairs talking about a reduction in subsidies on behalf of the nation.

Because we have no idea what it was. Just a complaint from his fellow Tories. I just think the bar for people losing their jobs over what they are watching on their private phone should be high. But I have beat this horse with my white knighting well to death, so I will leave it :)

I'd be curious to know where you *do* draw the line, @ciggiesnbeer.

I think we can all agree people should have freedom of sexuality with any consenting adult, you're at odds with most people here at least in thinking watching that material in public in view of others is unacceptable and reason to lose your job - if you're alright to publicly display porn to others without their consent, you may as well rub one out in public at the same time, I suppose.

Honestly, gross misconduct aside, I was surprised it's not a crime to display porn in a public place. Seems like something that should fall foul of public indecency laws unless it's in a private space with the consent of all parties.

I draw the line with openly showing porn in a public place around anyone, its just rude and creepy.

But thats a high bar and should have a reasonable process around it, like intent to be discrete. This guy seemed to have been hounded out of his job based on the uninvestigated opinions of his fellow Tories around him.

I find the rush to judgement here particularly for an elected representative has been far to quick. Anyways its a moot point as he has resigned but as you asked.

Well, I’m more than happy to laugh at a middle aged wanky tory caught watching porn at work.

I’m also happy to laugh at Putin’s wonky army.

It’s plough horses I feel sorry for.

My work has a 'no penetration, no punishment' rule on porn in the office.

Rudely leaning over someone's shoulder to watch their porn is an instant dismissal.

So watching Villa’s strikers this season is ok?

Well for starters you really do have some strange ideas about your ideologies here.

The "left" have traditionally been less about free speech than the right. That trend has never been more obvious than it is today

It is the Left who wish to no platform speakers and censor this and that, hence the whole "Cancel Culture" debate. The left have always mostly been about control and restriction. The idea that the left are champions of Free Speech is quite frankly laughable

As for the right and RIght WIng Puritans, yes some of those may still exist in the Tory Party but there are far more Libertarians in it than any puritans

You also have to ask yourself if your opinion on Porn in relation to the exploitation that goes on in that industry is acceptable, The Porn Debate usually turns left wing feminists inside out and is often excruciatng to watch the squirming that goes on
