Aston Villa under-23s 4 Newcastle United 0: Hat-trick hero Libor Kozak inspires 10-man Villa

Libor Kozak hit a hat-trick as Aston Villa under-23s provided some claret and blue cheer at Villa Park.

Kozak, continuing his recovery from an injury that disrupted his pre-season, supplied three clinical finishes to seal a 4-0 victory.

Villa’s big Czech left the field to chants of ‘Libor, Libor’ from the Trinity Road crowd at the final whistle.

The 90 minute run-out will have done wonders for his confidence and his fitness after a forgettable first cameo in the draw at Derby earlier this month.

His treble sealed a first win of the season for Kevin MacDonald’s following a defeat to Wolves and a draw at Brighton.

Villa’s other scorer was Johan Abdoul who broke the deadlock with a wonder goal before blotting his copybook with a sending off midway through the second half.

Despite playing the last 22 minutes with 10 men, Villa were able to see out the game comfortably, with Jed Steer securing a well-deserved clean sheet.

Steer had protected the clean sheet with close range saves from Callum Roberts and Haris Vuckic before the break.

Villa took the lead on 23 minutes thanks to an exquisite strike from Abdoul. There isn’t usually any immediate danger when the ball arrives at the feet of a centre half 25 yards out.

But Abdoul thought differently. He guided a measured shot into the top right corner, beyond the reach of Newcastle stopper Nathan Harker.

It was a goal Toon under-23 coach Peter Beardsley would have been proud of in his pomp, let alone a strapping defender.

Abdoul and centre-back partner Mitchell Clark also did a solid defensive job against Newcastle strikers Sammy Ameobi and Vuckic, a pair with Premier League experience and strength.

Kozak doubled Villa’s lead on 26 minutes.

Jordan Cox took advantage of poor play from Newcastle to seize possession down the left and tee up Kozak, who guided a shot inside the right hand post from the edge of the penalty area.

On the stroke of half-time it was three.

The ball came to him awkwardly near the penalty spot but he killed it with his right and swept it in with his left with a low effort into the bottom right corner.

Referee Anthony Serrano frustrated the Villa fans with a series of decisions after the break, culminating in the sending off of Abdoul for a second bookable offence on 68 minutes. Although Newcastle offered more of a threat after the break, Villa remained in control, even with a numerical disadvantage, and broke away to add a fourth goal 12 minutes from time.

Kozak scored it, latching onto a precise long pass from Callum O’Hare and keeping his composure to fire past Harker.

The visitors almost scored a late consolation goal when Jamie Holmes rounded Steer after a rare lapse from the goalkeeper but the substitute made a mess of his finish.

Villa (4-4-1-1): Steer, Leggett, Abdoul, Clark, Sundman; Linley (Doyle-Hayes 51), Abdo, Hale, Cox (Rowe 71); O’Hare; Kozak. Subs not used: Johansson, Mooney, Coates.

He was great today, his finishing is outstanding, he's never really had a run of games in our first team to prove that, whenever I've seen him for the u21s or first team, he has always impressed me greatly

He's always impressed you greatly for the first team? What did he do in his last first team appearance that impressed you greatly?

Perhaps you should re-read the post you quoted. Especially the " whenever I've seen him for the u21s or first team " bit. :)

Well I assume he hasn't seen him much for the first team then.

Well, possibly - or he could be more easily impressed than you are ;-) But he doesn't mention Libor's last first team appearance at all.

He didn't mention any specific games.

That's true, he didn't :-) But I would have thought it was fairly obvious that anyone that says he's been impressed by Kozak whenever he's seen him for u21s or the first team didn't watch his last first team appearance :-D

So hopefully the upgrade will include:

  • Improved backup
  • An improved Basic Input/Output System
  • A more efficient Central Processing Unit
  • A drive

An improved OS would be nice, but not essential.

The fans are already in place, and hopefully the required power supply as well.
