Tegis Posted November 28, 2017 VT Supporter Share Posted November 28, 2017 I need a sad topic, this will have to do. One of the teachers at my daughters school hung himself in the school gym. The state of his mind must have been so utterly dark. To say the kids are upset is the understatement of the year. **** this is depressing

Popular Post NurembergVillan Posted November 29, 2017 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted November 29, 2017 Another royal wedding being greeted with delirious forelock-tugging. It's 2017, we've got nurses and pensioners and kids going to food banks, and this country gleefully pays for our palace-dwelling overlords to wear shiny hats, eat swans, and ponce about in gold-leafed Ubers. Paddywhack
I'm ambivalent when it comes to the royals. I'm no royalist, but I'm not too bothered about the monarchy existing. I don't really begrudge the wealthy or privileged, whether someones earned it, been born in to or just won the lottery. But when there's people having to use food banks like @NurembergVillan said, or when homelessness is on the increase, there does seem to be something fundamentally wrong with the system, so I struggle to gather any kind of enthusiasm for a royal wedding.

Yea I'm the same. It's nice for the people who enjoy it. I'm not fussed about the wedding obviously, and it's horrible that people suffer when others don't - but where do you draw the line? Are food banks worse, or better than starving kids in Africa? @NurembergVillan, completely innocent question on my part, but I understand you've earned a good living by doing what you do - what do you do to help the less fortunate? Do you drive a big car? That's environmentally very irresponsible. Do you waste food you have in the fridge? That could be banked. Do you recycle? All rhetorical questions of course - but I get a bit miffed by people who say what you've said, but live quite a lavish lifestyle! (again, not sure if you do or not!). I think we have to accept that sometimes, there are things that can't change, and alter our own moral compasses. I earn an normal wage, I do normal things. I don't do much charity stuff, and if I earned more money, I'd do more lavish and expensive things - because I could afford to. This has wondered a little, but at the core of the post, it's about the haves and have nots. I think in the grand scheme of things, there a much worse, dangerous and worrying things to get annoyed over than a royal wedding will will cost the taxpayer the same 90p per year as we normally put towards the royal family per year. But then again, this is the right thread for your post!

NurembergVillan Posted November 29, 2017 Moderator Share Posted November 29, 2017 1 hour ago, AVFCDAN said: Agree with all of the above but they really do pay for themselves when you account for all the tourism and interest they generate. Quote Over 80% of Britons believe that the royal family provides “a signifcant amount of revenue for Britain through tourism”10 but there is little evidence for it. Chester Zoo, Stonehenge and the Roman Baths are all more successful tourist attractions than Windsor Castle, the only occupied royal residence to attract visitors in large numbers. If it was included in the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) list of top attractions it would come in at number 24. The claim that the monarchy is good for tourism seemed to receive official endorsement when VisitBritain, the UK’s national tourism agency, published a report claiming the royal family generated £500m of inbound tourism spending every year. But the research was deeply flawed. To get the figure, VisitBritain took previous research which found that 28% of visitors were attracted by Britain’s culture and heritage, then estimated that a quarter of Britain’s heritage attractions had “ties” with the British monarchy. £500m is simply a quarter of the estimated total spend by visitors attracted by Britain’s culture and heritage. VisitBritain now admits that the figure says nothing about what might happen if we transferred to a republic. In 2011 Republic met with senior VisitBritain officials and put it to them that there is no evidence that, if Britain abolished the monarchy, tourism would go down. They agreed. Even if we accept the VisitBritain figure, it equates to just 0.03% of GDP. The margin of error when calculating GDP is 0.7%. https://www.republic.org.uk/sites/default/files/royalexpenses.pdf Quote Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton will cost the economy £5billion by creating consecutive four-day weekends in April, businesses have warned. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/royal-wedding/8155625/Royal-wedding-marriage-will-cost-economy-5bn.html So if we take VisitBritain's best case scenario, and the Telegraph's worst case scenario regarding Kate and William, it'll take the economy 10 years of "tourism" to recover from the cost of that one elaborate party.

But then again, this is the right thread for your post! The key line here is that I've earned a good living by doing what I do. No employer (or client now I have my own business) has ever given me free money. What I've been paid is dwarfed by the revenue I've generated. In the interest of transparency (and there's no snarkiness here, they're fair questions) - How do you help those less fortunate? We have several direct debits that give money to charity, and will also donate ad hoc to Children In Need etc. Previously I've donated time, although the last 18 months has been hard because I've started my own business. One of the pledges of that business for 2018, though, is that me and my co-owner will donate at least 100 hours each to support charities that can benefit from our skills - so for instance we may go and work with some young adults leaving care to illustrate how the creative industry can be easier to access without a stellar formal education. I spent all day yesterday preparing a presentation that I'll deliver to 150 final year students tomorrow. I'm not charging for the day of work in preparing, or for my time being there. I'll probably go to town on the buffet though. Do you drive a big car? Yes, I do. Ideally I'll own a Tesla next, but they're pretty pricey. It weighs on my conscious to an extent, but it's conceivable that my brand new big car with the latest technologies will belch out less crap and be more efficient than a smaller, older car. I could've been mugged off by the salesman though. I fly a lot less than I used, and operate a virtual company so travelling is kept to a minimum where possible. Do you waste food in the fridge? Yes, unfortunately. My fridge seems to be a nursing home for vegetables, where they die peacefully surrounded by their friends and family. Anything that does go off, though, goes in the recycling. Similarly, I have a two-year-old who may ask for something for dinner and promptly refuse to eat it. In most cases, I then eat it and make her something else. Do you recycle? Yes, absolutely. I'm quite militant about it too. Having lived in two very green cities, Nuremberg and Vancouver, it's second nature now. We have four colours of wheelie bin, and they all get what's owed to them! I wouldn't say I live a lavish lifestyle, but I'm far more comfortable than many people. I'm reaping the rewards of having been blessed with a talent that pays well and I enjoy, that I've worked hard to make the most of, and that has been the main chip in the gambles I've taken in living around the world. The downside is that some of this has taken it's toll mentally, and twice my mental health has been at breaking point. I'm also still servicing the debts incurred by moving back from Canada, and starting my own business. Am I a hypocrite? Maybe. I don't think, though, that people should lead spartan lifestyles. I'm not a full-on socialist either. I understand the disparities in the distribution of wealth, and the reasons for it - sometimes people deserve what they have, sometimes they don't, sometimes people deserve more. I also believe in community and society, and the modern world often breaks my heart. Now I'll get back on topic - What I don't advocate is a family who rose to "power" by simply being the toughest (and wealthiest) kids in the playground centuries ago, and who continue to take from society to fund their lavish lifestyle - and compared to mine it IS lavish. They don't earn their money, they just receive it. It's not even inherited wealth, it's topped up by you and I. If someone inherits money and stops working, the money will dwindle. Not the royals. They just get us to sort it out. Even the terminology around them makes me gag. "Your majesty". "Your highness". It's **** cringeworthy. And the military aspect too. Look at the medals on this ****. He hasn't served for, what, 40 years? And AFAIK never in battle? And yet he's decorated like the Selfridges Christmas Tree. He ought to be embarrassed, parping about in public with that lot on his jacket.

He ought to be embarrassed, parping about in public with that lot on his jacket. RHETORICAL QUESTION @NurembergVillan, RHETORICAL! But no, that's great, and honestly, well done on a great career, you should be proud. However - the royals, they do "work", be that travelling the globe for charity, making foundations, supporting the military blah blah blah, but they do that for "free". They aren't sat on their arses watching Hollyoaks omnibuses. Do they lead lavish lifestyles? Yea of course. They are born into this though, could they just say "no, it's not for me" and go and work in Tesco? I'm not sure. But I don't envy the royal family, I almost pity them. They are born into incredible wealth, but the Queen won't ever retire, she can't say "I don't fancy sitting through some tedious show for 4 hours, acting interested" or anything. In fact, I almost pity them. Their lives are vocations. They get to travel the world yes, but I don't see them as free at all. And as for the padantry and stuff that goes with it - that's all for show isn't it. That's like going to a theatre, it entertains people, people travel from all corners of the Earth to see it - it won't stop, a bit like the Superbowl. As for the "royal highness" stuff - I get that. I also hate "Lord" Alan Sugar, "Sir Alex Ferguson" etc - what on earth rises them above "normal", everyday people? They still have to have a shit everyday.
mottaloo
Well said @NurembergVillan - not that you had to answer any of those points or justify your lifestyle. The key word you used was "earned". Unlike Die Königen and her brood, it wasn't given to you under the guise of privilege. As for Charlie boy.....well, he talks to plants, y'know. Enough said
