Bulgaria lost, Denmark losing, Czech's winning. THERE IS STILL HOPE FOR US!

There isn't, this is the group where the 2nd place team misses out.

Even if  Czech beats Bulgaria that would leave you on 15 points and once the 6 from Malta are deducted Czech only have 9.

Why would 6 be deducted from Malta wins?

In 9 groups one 2nd place team will miss out so Uefa decided to deduct points the 2nd place team got against the bottom team e.g. so the two wins wouldn't count against the likes of Andorra and San Marino and Czech's two wins against Malta wouldn't count either, only results from 5th place onwards.

In other words you're still screwed. ;)

BTW who'd have thought even 5 years ago the leading forward for Spain in a world cup qualifier would be playing for Swansea and the Italian striker leading the line would be playing for Southampton.

It does show that Spain have a poor attack. Weaker even than England's.

Iceland 2-0 Cyprus, fully deserved. Sigþórsson and Sigurðsson.

Switzerland have qualified but it's between us and Slovenia for the playoff place. We are on 16 and have Norway away on Tuesday. Slovenia are on 15 points and have Switzerland away left.

Shiiiiiit this is going to be tight.

And the Belgium striker playing for Villa would've sounded about right at that time (before suddenly morphing into the best footballing nation going).

Are Spain through already? Why on earth is Michu playing and Negredo and Iniesta on the bench?

They needed four points to go through before tonight. They collected three of them against Belarus though they still need one against Georgia on Tuesday to guarantee winning the group, but yes, they are in the position where they can afford to experiment a little.  Michu got called up after David Villa got injured I think but given the form he has shown over the last couple of years (he had a very good season for Rayo before Swansea signed him) then he probably deserves a call up even if it is just because he is a different kind of striker to the players Spain usually call up.   I'm pleased for the guy too, he is one of those players who has served his time in the lower leagues before making it big. He is 28 in March and this is still only his third season playing for a club in the top division and the first time it's not at a newly promoted club.  I think it would be great if he made it to the World Cup.
