Most overrated player in football history?

Totti.

have to agree with this, have never got the hype on this word removed

1 of the most overrated players of all time

Not at all.

He chose to stay at Roma for his career and had a few injuries, and the ignorance of many fans make out injuries as the same as being crap.

He had/has fantastic skills, a vision second to none and could score beautiful goals. Basically a goal every other game for Roma in the Serie A, being their alltime topscorer and most capped player. The 5th top scorer in the history of the Serie A, despite all his injuries.

He was never that upper world class player, but did anyone really call him that? Still a very, very skilled player.

Agreed on Totti.

He probably overrates himself, but in terms of where everyone else thinks he is, i'd say it's about right.

As for the Ashley Cole discussion, I think his day is gone, but he's consistently been one of the best leftbacks around for about 10 years.

The guy's a clearing in the woods, but he's a brilliant player.

Very surprised to see Totti mentioned. He never really gets mentioned as a World class player, even though his goal scoring record for someone who isn't really a striker is absoloutely ridiculous. One of the few real loyal players left in football too.

Georgi Kinkladze. This is only amongst City fans, but he is arguably the most overrated footballer of them all amongst a fan base. He was an eye catching playmaker, but his only great season came when City were in the Championship and he scored 12 goals. When you consider Adel Taarabt did in the Championship last season, playing in the same position, it shows just how much lower the level is and how much easier it is for such players to look good. When Kinkladze played in the top flight, the most he scored was 4 goals and was dropped for being a luxury at times. He then went on to flop at Ajax. The reason I say he's so overrated, is because on Bluemoon City fans often debate who was better out of him and David Silva! This really isn't much different to deabting who is better out of Iniesta and Taarabt! City fans genuinely put him in their top 3 best ever players, when in reallity he wouldn't even get in their current 25 man squad. Their Kinkladze delusion is driven by pure nostalgia, when he was the one thing that entertained them during a dark period for their club, so they love him for it. It's mental!

I agree there. Another man in the right place at the right time. He did score a good goal against Southampton once though.

Ah, I see. Someone disagrees with you and you basically call them a sheep with no opinion of their own. No point in continuing this with someone who can't either accept or respect anothers opinion.

How are you (or anybody else for that matter) able to hold an opinion without being able to cite any reason or reasons to hold that opinion?

Gary Neville was a competent centre half, Carlos Cuellar covered at full back pretty well. Christ, J Lloyd Samuel had a stab at centre half on and off. All defenders covering in other defensive positions. There are many other examples. I'm sure Xavi has played in several midfield positions as I suspect Iniesta has too.

Gary Neville was a prety poor centre half. There's also the small matter of the 2 you've mentioned being around 6 foot. Ashley Cole is about 5'9. So to answer your question, he hasn't been played at centre half because no top flight manager would make such a stupid mistake as to play someone who is both small and not well built to play centre back.

It really is a ridiculous arguement and there's an obvious bias in here. Unsurprising you've criticised Terry as well, how do you explain Chelsea winning things and making a Champions League final with Cole and Terry if they are so bad.

So basically your arguement against Ashley Cole is that he doesn't get to pick the team. Because I otherwise fail to see how a manager picking him at left back and nowhere is else is somehow his fault.

No..... my argument was, if he's "easily the worlds best left back" one would assume he's a bloody good footballer and so would feel comfortable occasionally covering in a couple of positions. No manager has yet felt confident enough to do this.... because in my opinion he's not a "bloody good footballer". He's limited, slow witted (in a footballing sense) and has little discipline.

My bias is against this commonly held notion that Ashley Cole is the best left back in the world. Nobody has yet presented any evidence that would back this up other than he has pace and works hard.

I get very aggrieved that players are described as world class by some hack or a no-mark pundit then somehow it becomes gospel. It generally follows that there is no platform for this assumption to stand on, yet the myth perpetuates.

I just wish people would judge more with own opinions instead of those of others.

Like I said previously, it's the kings new clothes.

I think he's quick, positionally rarely ever caught, very good defending one on one's, good left back, doesn't often lose possession, creates a good threat down the left foot getting forward. Doesn't waste final ball by hopelessly swinging balls into the box.

He's a very good defender, a good full back going forward and was one of the best if not the best left back in the world for the last 5-10 years. Players like Ronaldo struggled to make an impact against Cole.

There is no evidence for him being the best left back in the world or not, it's just an opinion based on what we've seen from him.

Garrincha. I mean look at his silly wonky legs.

Rubbish.

I was half expecting an underrated thread to start up from this and wondered if garrincha would pop up, videos of him make him look amazing, his legs and lifestyle make it seem even more amazing

skys worlds greatest did a brilliant piece on him but there is a documentary on him and pele which is even better

talking of skys worlds greatest they included rivelino who is well before my time too and is seemingly more in the mix than standing out in Brazilian players so can someone tell me if sky have overrated him or if in general he is underrated?
