Technically that one isn't an album it's a compilation of non-album 7" releases and other rarities The very first track - The Mirror, whilst slightly atypical is a masterpiece. I get more volume out of my CD player so thought I'd grab a new selection of CDs to play from the living room. This was the first CD that grabbed my attention From 1993, Dr Phibes and the House of Wax Equations - Hypnotwister, the second and final album from the tragedy riden Chester band. They were probably a couple of years behind where their sound would have been appreciated but I think if this was released now, the King Gizzard / Porn Crumpet types would be all over this like a rash. Dubby bass and effects, tight rock drumming and spiralling effect laden rock guitars, They were often great live Not something that appears on streaming services, probably because Howard King Jr (Singer / Guitarist ) murdered his mother and got banged up for life Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Portishead - Third Postishead, lazily refered to as Trip Hop because they were from Bristol at the same time as Massive Attack and Tricky. Trip yes, Hop - noooooo! I love Third, of the three studio albums I think its definitely the best, a sonic challenge at first, it jars with Beth Gibbons' bittersweet voice against the backdrop of Barrow's angular drums and Uttley's Guitars, effects and keyboards filling iin the gaps. This album has never clicked with me since day one and still doesnt now but it still contains a lot of my favourite songs (Psychosocial, Snuff, Sulfur, Dead Memories, AHIG). Just never meshes together to create a solid album overall. But God damn those singles are **** strong. The first track is just an ambient, I'd say intro but that doesn't do it's length justice The lazy comparison would be LCD Soundsystem (So Talking Heads really) but this really is modern Post Punk, there's all kinds of references, apart from Post Punk. They have that TH / David Byrne thing but theres allsorts in here, Kraut, Jazz, Indie... and lots more besides The typical tracks are 2 & 3Match Bet & The Cleaer. The opener is Savage, like I said just and ambient mash, the closer (Rodeo) whilst actually featuring the band playing is very different to the middle two tracks and does feature the line "I'm not a psycho taxi driver" so wins bonus points for that There's a lot to like here, give it a go. The cover of The Pop Group's Thief (sorry two covers of The Pop Group's Thief) standout as well ass as Collision. Also the cover of Can's Mother Sky, I wish I had more Loop than I have EDIT: Whilst listening to this I am reminded of a gig we did in Lincoln. Benny Profane and Loop, it would have been just about the time of these two singles. The gig was in a church halland the dressing room was a small room at the back that both bands shared and it really did smelli like many church halls did back then of musty damp bibles and other church paraphanalia. I can smell it now listening to this.
