Popular Post Vancvillan
This. 18 goals in his first 38 games for the club across his (approx) first season and a half for the club (Houllier/McLeish), in the England reckoning, after an £18m club record transfer. In pops Paul Lambert. Fast forward 2 and a half years (approx). the player has been frozen out, suddenly can't score and has little/no has transfer value. A waste of an investment and bad use of the player by Lambert. I think those two and a half years are the meat of the issue, so if we fast forward we're missing a whole lot. You could say the same about Berbatov at Man Utd (worth 30 million but Fergie is awful and ruined him), but you'd be taking a complex set of events and boiling it down to one conclusion. As a side bar, I'm not a Lambert fan - there are plenty of sticks to beat PL with, but in my opinion this isn't one of them.
Brumstopdogs
Bit different scenario there! I think you'll find Berbatov won two league titles at Man U, scored successfully (48 goals in 108 league games), and played over 30 league games in each of his first 3 seasons and only in his last season at Man U did he not play so much. They could afford to do that because they had Rooney, Hernandez and Wellbeck in addition to Berbatov and they were scoring plenty of goals (89 in the season Berbatov was frozen out). Sounds like he got a lot out of the player in his time at Man U and obviously given the size of that club generally have considerable funds to replace a player should they wish to. It actually turned out to be a master stroke by Fergie as he purchased RVP who won them the title the following season. Compare that to Bent (a proven goalscorer) who then gets 18 goals in 38 games for Villa and then pretty much ruined as a player under Lambert's "management" IMO of course.
Dodgyknees
I thi nk if it was McLeish treating Bent like this, a lot more would take the side of the player. It is always hard when you have a manager who treats players like this, so some need to keep repeating 'Bent is evil' to try and get it into the mindset of others. Surely that's just the same as 'Lamberk iz Evil' to try and get it into the mindset of others...... Bent's had his chances, fluffed his lines (including some important misses) and has shown no desire whilst on the pitch. I disagree (although agree Gabby hasn't done enough to warrant a new contract)
Dodgyknees
Seeing him walk back from attack, not following markers, not scoring in 20+ games, not giving enough effort, only performing every now and then. Bent wasn't given the chance to have a run of 20 consecutive games, let alone not score in 20.
theboyangel
thank goodness for that - we're hamstrung enough as a team without having to play with effectively 10 men with Bent.
Dodgyknees
We've played N'Zogbia, Gabby and Weimann who have let us down a lot more, but still get chances. N'Zog has just come hack from injury, the other two have no excuses. Giving a captains armband, stripping it and dumping a player before Christmas, when he has just come back from injury, and isn't given a chance. That is pure incompetence from a manager who doesn't have a clue how to use a player, so sticks with one set way of playing - and failing.
HeyAnty
Well you can't expect much from a player when he gets a few minutes here and there. His goalscoring record was as good as anybodys until Lambert became manager. This. 18 goals in his first 38 games for the club across his (approx) first season and a half for the club (Houllier/McLeish), in the England reckoning, after an £18m club record transfer. Why do you stray from the Lambert thread, all your posts are directed at him so i wonder why you pop out of that thread to post about him in other threads? foreveryoung
A change tactically to fit bent in would not have killed the game, being that we had no Benteke and was struggling for goals. Yes you have to play to his strengths, but im sure he could have bagged us a couple when we were desperate. Kingman
He could score 10/12 goals out on loan and would still get overlooked by Lambert.
TRO
The same argument surrounding Bent, is the same argument that surrounded Jimmy Greaves and Geoff Hurst all those years ago. Bent is like Greaves in as much he is a predator, but uses a lot of idle time during the 90 minutes. Some see the goals alone, as the reason to play them, some see the work rate of the the likes of Hurst, Shearer,Yorke, Gray,Withe as essential. It's been said a lot o times before but you seem to be ignoring it. Lambert made Bent the club captain immediately and obviously wanted Bent to be a leading member of the squad on and off the pitch. Bent clearly either through lack of being arsed or some other failings managed to piss that special status straight up the wall. He has been given numerous chances by Lambert since and done nothing, missing crucial sitters at crucial times for us in the process. He then got a big chance to prove himself and his worth at Fulham, he did neither. Then he came back and was given MORE CHANCES to play his way back into the team and prove his worth. He has failed to do it again and as such has gone on loan to Brighton. Bent has no-one to blame but himself.
Brumstopdogs
Yes he was briefly made captain but has he really been given numerous chances by Lambert? When you actually look at it in the league under Lambert he started just EIGHT games across the all time Lambert has been here. That doesn't sound like he has had "numerous' chances in fact when in the same period, for Villa, Gabby has had 63 starts and in a large portion of those has been ineffective. As for his time at Fulham, hardly any Fulham players did themselves justice in the season they went down. Bent, partly down to injuries, only started 11 games so hardly his fault! The most prolific premier league striker we've had for a number of years was mis-managed and the investment in him wasted by Lambert.
TrentVilla Posted November 29, 2014 Moderator Share Posted November 29, 2014 It wasn't due to injuries that Bent started so few games at Fulham.
