ozvillafan Posted April 1, 2013 VT Supporter Share Posted April 1, 2013 100% disagree. There's a reason that after goalies it's the latest (in terms of age) area to develop and the best CBs are usually 28+. All the best CBs in the world made mistakes when they were younger - similar to the ones made by Clark and Baker - and they learnt from them. .....so for the last 15-odd years he's been told that sliding into a forward in the box is a good idea? It's a bad thing to do in *any* level of football. "Keep your feet in the box" would have been something drummed into him from an early age, as it was for anyone who played CD as a kid down the local park. It's not inexperience being shown here. It's stupidity.
VillanousOne
yep also can't deny that any defender at any professional level should know that a tackle like that is sheer stupidity. But in fairness there are older more experienced defenders than Baker who have done exactly the same stupid tackles, he may be a clown but he's not alone in the fact. He's a 21 year-old CB in his first proper season at the top flight of English football - playing against one of the most in-form strikers in the league right now, and he mistimed a tackle. KennyPowers
Give Baker a break. I'm not sure I've ever seen a player with the twisting/turning/wriggling technique that Suarez uses. The guy is just a nightmare to play against. Baker deserves to start ahead of Clark from what I've seen this season.
Houlston
The dive in is a poor one, its bad defending at any age. But its not purely down to him not being good enough and age (not experience) does play a part. People in general tend to get calmer as they get older, he is young at 21 and was probably very pumped up when he made the tackle. There's no way this makes him not good enough, plenty of times before that he had made some great tackles & blocks. It was poor & daft but age does play a part in stupid decisions like this. And as Kenny says Suarez is an absolute nightmare to play against. Edited April 1, 2013 by Houlston

lapal_fan
A forward famous for being tricky, being tricky, should have stayed on his feet and ushered him down the line, like you're taught from the age of 10. Suarez had absolutely no one to pass to in the box, if he had crossed, nothing would have happened, if he tried to cut inside (as he did) and Baker hadn't had slid in, we had another defender in the place he would have run to. That was a silly, needless foul.

Kwan
I think Baker will still come good. I just wish he would have followed Vlaar's example and just simply not allow the cut back and let the cross in. Don't give it to him, make him work for it. However, what we are saying is that this mistake was down to pure stupidity rather than inexperience. The fact he was playing against the most in form striker, says that he should have been even more aware he needs to stay on his feet imo. Unfortunately, the vast majority of footballers are not the brightest sparks in the box and that was clearly evident with Baker yesterday.

Dr_Pangloss
Yep, you don't dive into on a tackle on a forward in the box, especially one like Suarez, a player who at the very minimum is looking for the opportunity to go over in those situations. It was pure stupidity and at almost 22 Baker should know better, things like this are after all taught to centre halves at a very young age. The mistakes by the likes of Baker and Clark could end up costing us big come the end of the season.
Con
Bannan, Clark... now Baker. It's getting a bit predictable. Writing off Villa players. Bannan's too weak. Clark is stupid. Baker's stupid. Weimann has no talent but works hard. Albrighton is rubbish. Delfonesco is stupid. Delph is a yellow card waiting to happen. Agbonlahor can't play football. The only good player in the team is Benteke, when he decides to have a good game.

Those are opinions of certain posters not of every single person who posts on here and they're all individual opinions not one big statement. Plus we don't have a player called Delfonesco. --EDIT-- Here you go because I feel bad Bannan's like the Incredible Hulk. Clark is Football's' Stephen Fry. And Baker is. Weimann has talent but is lazy. Albrighton is brilliant. Delfonesco is not real. Delph is a red card waiting to happen. Con
One thing these players have in common, they are all better than people give them credit. People say 22 years old isn't young because 18 and 19 year olds can play in a first team, but there is a big difference being a 22 year old in a team of 25-30 year olds and a 22 year old in a team with an average age of 23. In John Terry's first full season as a 20 year old he was paired with French CB legend Marcel Desailly (won Euro 2000 and World Cup 1998 for France). That's a big advantage to Baker or Clark being paired with each other, or even with Ron Vlaar. For that reason, I'm not ready to say that either Baker or Clark have less talent than John Terry. Plus we don't have a player called Delfonesco. He hasn't played for us for a long time. Edited April 1, 2013 by Con
