He didn't have to go overboard with the "my club" BS while inserting a release clause into the contract. That's the main issue, along with some minor things like what he's said since he's been at City. And while I totally get that he wants to play at the highest level, leaving after another season of progression understandably irked a lot of fans.

I don’t get it. It is his club. Just because he’s left doesn’t change that. He’s supported Villa his whole life and played for us for 10 years.

Tht progression was largely down to him. If he hadn’t been so good and attracted the attention of Man City we wouldn’t have progressed.

And wheres he got that bright idea from?.. Thats right Gareth Southgate.

Either he's been told directly he can't be trusted due to 'European inexperience'' or its his pure observation on why he isnt starting ahead of others (Mount,Foden) when clearly a better player.

It isn't right and shows another reason on why Southgate is a useless prick and its a sad state of affairs a serial failure has such influence on things.

He's not a useless prick. He took us to  the semi-final of a world cup and Euro-final which is a lot better than any other manager since Ramsey. He just is very defensive and didnt trust Grealish.

Foden played 25 minutes in the knockout stage of the Euros, somebody just needs prep him right for interviews

He's right though. You can guarantee Grealish will be playing far more for England now that he's at Man City.

If Konsa moved to Man Utd tomorrow he'd be in the next England squad guaranteed.

Any average manager could've achieved that at a minimum.

I beg to differ, he is a useless prick, a lucky one as well. Any half decent manager with the players available would have won the Euros.

He's probably had the best pool of England players in the last 50 years with the exception of Sven, who was, well...a useless prick.

Well if he thought that then he's deluded as neither Phillips or Rice played at that level.

Different stages of their career. Rice will be pushing for a move soon enough and that one will get ugly.

Phillips will move on too once Bielsa gets itchy feet.

This. National managers see the big bucks moves as a validation of the player’s ability. ‘If he’s good enough for Citeh…’

All of those attitude issues/concerns over tracking back that Southgate was reportedly concerned over haven’t gone away…

But training with the likes of De Bruyne everyday, rather than say Neil Taylor (no offence, Neil), must elevate him somewhat.

Any excuse eh Jack?

Southgate himself was saying he was picking players who had at experience at CL level (I know it contradicts some of his other selections but it’s what he was saying about the forwards).

It was obviously all BS. He wanted out ASAP.

If he wanted out surely he wouldn’t have signed a new deal to stay at Villa?

He’d have asked for a transfer, or ran his contract down.

He can absolutely love everything about Aston Villa, and want to play in the Champions league and earn a shit load of money at the same time.

He’s turned down multiple opportunities to leave the club already. Realistically if he stays it’s going to be middle third of the PL each year.

He leaves his boyhood club and realises his ambitions as a footballer by becoming a champion and establishing himself in the England side.

He was never going go stay forever.

IIRC he still had 3/4 years on his contract but with no release clause, so by signing a new one with a release clause he actually made it easier to leave.

I think there's some middle ground between "stay forever" and "stay for just 10 months after professing your belief in the Villa project", surely? Also I don't think he actually personally turned down any transfers. He was all but ready to go to Spurs until the club blocked it (don't blame him for that at all).

Then last year with United, there wasn't a formal bid or anything, likely just chatter behind the scenes with his agent. It didn't materialize so he signed the contract while insisting on the release clause which is essentially indicating that he wanted out the minute a club activated it. It's also pretty clear his team was in contact with City well before they actually bid (conspicuously the exact release clause amount, that the club was trying to keep under wraps).

Of course there were a bunch of factors that went into his transfer, like pressure from Southgate and the general ambition of wanting to play at the highest level, and you can never begrudge him that.

I don’t think we hear the half of what goes on behind the scenes.

A few years ago Villa made several bids to get Marc Albrighton back to the club over more than 1 transfer window but there was absolutely nothing in the media about it.

After Villa accepted the £100m (had to of course) they also said they had rejected numerous other lower bids for him, again nothing in the media about these apart from what Villa shared.

You don’t know who has bid for him or who he has rejected.

The City offer was ridiculous, £370k a week, nearly £20m a year. It’s insane on a financial level max incredible on a football level. I don’t expect he thought last year when he signed a new deal this was round the corner.
