This test definitely shows how evenly matched the sides are tbh

And the difference in styles. Bazball batting v traditional run accumulation.  The main issue is we can't take their wickets.

You have to question the bowlers.

5th day pitch that's had all sorts going on wet and dry.

New ball against the tail end. Haven't really looked like getting the job done.

Aussies needed 54 runs with only two tailender wickets to play with and yet have got there pretty comfortably in the end

I personally think Root went too hard yesterday when he was in, imagine another 30 runs from him.

As much as Bazball has been brilliant over the past 12 months, that was infuriating. Sticking to the same 'plan' for 10+ overs and trying to bounce them out even though it was quite clear it wasn't working is stupid

They never really looked like doing it in all honesty.

Doubt they'd have done it even with the 4 extra overs with the new ball they should have had.

I'd change the bowlers for the next one. He didn't even try Anderson with the new ball. He's virtually a passenger at this point.

Can't gamble on Ali again either if his fingers are going to lead to so many loose balls they smash away.

Could and should have won.

Look at the extras as well.  Australia 19, England 44. That's also cost us dear.

Our tactics were great for making it a watchable test, but really we threw that match away. Should have piled up a first innings lead when the batsmen were finding it easy, and then we could have declared in the second if we wanted to force a result. Just don’t get the logic at all.

A bit unlucky with Moeen’s injury, but Root deputised well.

There were enough missed chances to suggest the fielding setup was mostly very good, and then I think the ball just stopped doing anything at the end.

Would hope Khawaja gives something back to Robinson after dragging Aussies to victory

Robinson is extremely unlikeable, I love the banter between batsman and bowler but that was just poor.

If he had done that to a Warner or a Ponting then I would have understood that there was probably plenty said between both sides.

The declaration is neither here nor there, Jimmy could have come in on a duck. If anything cost us the game it was the two second innings wickets after the first unscheduled stop when the conditions were awful

Trying to work out the more stupid decision.

1) The declaration with Root well over a century and set whilst still under 400 on DAY ONE

2) Getting Carey out after 81 overs with Aus 228-8 with the old ball and then not immediately switching to the new ball - instead letting Cummins (a known slogger who targets spin) target your part-time spinner for about 30 runs and put them into a winning position

3) Not picking your best wicket-keeper so you can watch Jonny Bairstow flounder around gifting Australia another 200 runs rather than just selecting him as a batter

Then you've got the Duckett and Crawley constant failures, Moeen Ali adding nothing other than stat-padding the Australian batsmens test averages and picking half-fit bowlers.

Maybe Australia will have their batsmen suffer similar levels of abject stupidity for the next 4 tests. We can only hope.

Well that was bloody agonising! 😫

What a great advert for red ball cricket though. With T20 and the IPL especially dominating world cricket, it's great to remind people about how wonderful (despite the agonising loss) test cricket can be.
