Just watched On The Road.

Pretty true to the spirit of the book.

You're obviously a well read man but I don't see how you've come to this conclusion. Its a bloody awful film, the characters drift in and out, Kerouac's apprehension is massively exaggerated and ultimately there is no buzz that transpires from the novel to the reader. Its a bit of an insult of a film to what is a great piece of literature.

Finally watched The War Zone. Jeez I hate when pornos have a storyline.

You are an evil man.  :D

Finally a response :P

Anyhoo, last night I watched Tyrannosaur and have to say I really enjoyed it 8.5/10. Olivia Colman was outstanding in it. She really is under-utilised as an actress. Mullan is great too but she really steals the show in some of the scenes. I'm running out of films that I own and haven't watched. Next up is 'Almost Famous'.

That's right.

It's a bloody awful book.

I kind of like Kerouac's poetry, but OTR is one of the most overrated novels ever.

Let's say if I'd known it also starred Zooey Deschanel and Phillip Seymour Hoffman I'd have watched it long before now (for differing reasons obviously :P).

To be fair, I was overstating things a little there. But it's true that when I first read OTR (some years ago, having heard people raving about it) I was deeply disappointed. I thought it was self-indulgent, narcissistic and frankly rather boring.

Since then, I've read quite a bit of stuff by the "Beat Generation" writers (including Kerouac), and have kind of warmed to the whole movement.

What I meant about the film was that it reflected both aspects of the book - its qualities and its flaws. I sort of enjoyed it, but it was essentially inconsequential. Some nice cinematography, but (among other things) not enough proper jazz for my liking!

"Lonesome Traveler" is my favourite of Kerouac's prose works, BTW.

Watched Rock Of Ages over the weekend and it was totally meh.

Sure, Tom Cruise and the two main leads were very good but overall it was pretty drab - especially that seriously over-rated (and over-employed) cockney clearing in the woods, Russell Brand (his 'British' accent was appalling!!!!!)

I think the main thing was, considering it is a musical adaptation, the sound editing was so over 'produced' you never got the impression it was the character singing but instead, them miming to the soundtrack.

I am watching Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. I know it's a kids film but even so , it is remarkably better than the Clash of the Titans remake.

trailer for no2, sea of monsters came out at the weekend, out in the summer

Just back from seeing 'The Place Beyond The Pines' and I'm feeling a bit unsure about the whole film as it's a bit of a mixed bag. The whole thing is quite an epic story to take on and it is done well for the first half of the film. However, I just felt it began to drag in the second half. Gosling was great in the first part of the film (as expected) and Cooper was also very good. It's worth seeing but I was expecting more from this one.

I've also been to see 'Trance' and 'Spring Breakers' recently. I enjoyed 'Trance' and it has a typical Boyle look to it. The story thinks it's more complicated than it actually is, although the twist is a good one. 'Spring Breakers' was just one big mess. It was nice looking but was like one big long music video. Franco was good as the gangster in it though and it's always nice to see Disney girls gone bad...

Trance feels like exactly what it is - Danny Boyle making a TV series into a film. Alright and fun enough but nothing terribly special.

I've just rewatched The Hobbit. Still flawed, the film is near reference on bluray and benefits massively from being in 2d and standard frame rate - the shifty looking CGI is completely gone. The second watch has revealed the film's odd nature as not feeling a film unto itself rather more, it's all set up, but it's still a fun romp. I also spotted this time that the reveal Jackson made of the next film, with Gandalf visiting the tombs of the Nazgul (something not in any of Tolkien's work) is referenced and set up in this film during the discussion of the Morgul blade. Which again shows how much this film is just a set up piece.

Yep there are some big changes in the film.. The blade and second wizard arent in the book and the book doesn't say what gandolf is doing (which I'm guessing the second film will).

Not as good as lotr, but a decent enough watch

Watched "Prometheus" last night. I forgot it was an "Aliens" prequel, so I had no idea what to expect. I liked it. Gorgeous to look at, and decent story. Not sure why it was so controversial.

Because it's a terrible mess and reeks of cash in, mostly.

Being a Ridley Scott movie, it looks utterly gorgeous but it's bankrupt in pretty much every other respect. Mostly because they let Lindelof loose on the script and the studio decided it would like to make a trilogy of Alien prequels before you got to Alien, despite the fact you can tell before the script was utterly butchered (and had what was clearly another film on Ridley's mind, the Chariots of the Gods thing he's fascinated by, crashed into it) that it was going to be a film that leads directly into Alien.

Saying all that I enjoy it still but it could, should arguably, have been so very much more.
