Chindie Posted July 12, 2019 VT Supporter Share Posted July 12, 2019 Lion King remake has been given a bit of a mauling. It's been caught by the trap of these remakes - it's so faithful to the original it's basically a shot for shot remake, but with the charm all removed through the switch to realistic animals. Can't say I'm surprised. Dumbo just didn't work for me for similar reasons, nothing particularly wrong with it but just no reason for its existence. Aladdin I actually didn't mind at all and thought was ok, I'm sure I will see this at some point to make my own judgement.
theboyangel
I don’t get the current furore over remaking Disney cartoons into live action movies. Especially when they are direct lifts of their animated counterparts. has the movie world completely dried up of original ideas? never a fan of the Lion King anyway. As far as I understand this is also something to do with licensing (or at least Dumbo, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast is) and having to make the movies to renew it. Strange not to have the IP/licence for their own films without a threat of expiration. still find the idea odd. Its the original stories that they have a limited license on I think. Either way all quite cynical. Saying that I enjoyed Aladdin and I'm all up for the Lion King tech demo.
Popular Post Chindie Posted July 12, 2019 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted July 12, 2019 Disney does have copyright issues, most famously Mickey Mouse via Steamboat Willie. That film and that version of Mickey Mouse will enter public domain in a few years and will be open to public use (in some ways... Disney has the trademark over both and that does not expire - meaning theres a helluva court case coming up about exactly where the copyright and trademark overlap...). Disney remaking their classics doesn't renew the copyright or licence for them. A new Dumbo doesn't mean that in a few years the old one will be protected. Hence why anyone could, today, go make a movie of Beauty and the Beast, despite Disney having released 2 versions of the story in the last 30 years - the original is public domain. What they couldn't do is overtly copy the Disney version in its designs and so on (until that goes out of copyright, of course). There could be an argument of course that Disney remaking their works so close to the originals is a way of artificially extending copyright - when the original Dumbo goes public domain, ignoring trademark, you'd have a hard time using it without infringing the newer version. But again that would be up to the court to decide if someone tried it. Would the argument be, for instance, if someone made a traditional animation of Dumbo that looked notably different to the new one, that that would not infringe the new version? Some lawyers would be licking their lips either way... Disney's remakes are much less sinister than that, and is why they've worked on a swathe of works across their history - while they have remade old stuff like Dumbo or the Jungle Book, they've also remade Beauty and the Beast, and the Lion King, films barely a third into their copyright lives. Why? Basically Disney has a **** ton of classic properties that they've had sat there doing nothing bar the occasional re-release or home media tart up. The new hotness is photo real CGI and so on. They looked at this embarrassment of riches gathering dust, looked at the growth of big budget spectacle releases aimed at family audiences, and said 'Well, we do like money...' and it's paid off. All of these films have made good money (mostly, they've had a couple that underperformed). The idea has paid dividends. Not critically, they're all over the shop on that front (the trap I mentioned - either too faithful or too different, always whiffing of cynicism). But at the box office, they're laughing. 2

Big enough to have whole scenes added and changed to blockbusters. Mulan potentially is huge in China. They'll do whatever they think they need to to maximise the money there. Supposedly including dropping the whole whacky dragon sidekick that was Disney's thing through their 90s resurgence. Little Mermaid is coming, casting has begun already. They all will be coming eventually. Look at Disney's catalogue, they're all money on the table. Shit, they even remade Pete's Dragon, and who on earth cares about Pete's Dragon?! useless
Why don't the muppets do another movie adaptation of a classic novel. I'd love to see that.

The last Muppets movie didn't do well enough at the box office. So feature films are going to be parked for a while you'd suspect. Best bet is a series on the Disney streaming service.
