The Film Thread

I have a Field in England recorded, will probably watch over the weekend if I get chance.

Been to the cinema a couple of times this week...

This is the End - I think summing it up as a bunch of unlikable actors deciding to film a 2 hour long mutual masturbation session probably sums it up, It's a comedy where I didn't laugh in a single, solitary instance. Hopeless.

And Now You See Me. Almost certainly the downright dumbest film I've seen in donkeys years. I can't even say it's that impressive in a kind of brainless fun way because you spend the entire thing going 'This is a film about magic tricks but it's not impressive because a number of the actual tricks aren't actually tricks and are simply CGI'. It would have genuinely been better if the tricks performed where performed like they were a genuine magic show. Even then the plot would still be hopeless but you could at least enjoy the spectacle. The characters are cardboard cut outs, the plot is absolutely nonsense, you'll know exactly whats about to happen from the first shot. On the plus side it has a gloriously late title card that raised a smile. Not anywhere as near as smart as it thinks it is and the moment you see Michael Caine you wish you were watching the Prestige.

EDIT - Also recently saw Cloud Atlas. Now there is a film. It is is brilliantly eclectic. It's daft in places - predominately the race and gender bending casting across the storylines which in most cases looks absurd - Hugh Grants aging playboy in one storyline is rather like he's wearing the carcass of a roast turkey rather than a mask - but blimey is it awesomely pretty. It also has a nice... atmosphere. It's intensely relaxing to watch somehow in the manner it is shot and the way things weave into and out of each other, you spot the fleeting connections between the lines, the score is delicate and gorgeous, there are some top notch performances across the cast and it is, at times, even genuinely laugh out loud funny. And it can bring a tear to the eye too. Even the message is nice, if hardly earth scorchingly thought provoking. A brilliant piece of film making.

Funnily enough I really like the Fountain too, and felt the similarity instantly when watching Cloud Atlas. Cloud Atlas is more ambitious and perhaps a little less... on the nose?

I liked the Fountain too, but felt a bit disappointed that it couldn't match its ambition. For me only Tree of Life succeeds in such ambitious scope because it's rooted in its biographical nature of Malicks life.

But I am a fan of such movies, I really admire the effort that needs to go into even attempting such projects. It must be tough to avoid it just being a mess.

'Pacific Rim' was great fun. Go in expecting a fun monster film and you'll come out happy. Go in expecting an extremely thought provoking film and you'll leave disappointed. It's got the typical del Toro look to it and is very much style over substance. It works though and is a cracker of a monster film. Well worth the wait!

Oh and stay until after the credits...

Brazil, that's a great movie too. Yeah I just like all those flawed over ambitious movies.

So saw The Lookout last night. Thought it was a good movie. Seems like there are loads of movies from 2007 that were good that I've never seen.

Wonder what I was doing back then that I saw so few of them.

Watched Place Beyond The Pines. Really enjoyed it. A bit muddled but a very good film. Thought the two kids were really great.

Watched it myself last night. I thought it was ok, the first act dwarfs the other two and once it loses that momentum I found it hard to concentrate to a degree. I found myself pining for the pace and tone of the first act. For me the bigger issue was Bradley Cooper. He's such a dull, soulless actor. I cannot understand the appeal at all.

An interesting morality tale that fails on a few levels. Too many for me, but I'd recommend it.

Watched The Devil's Backbone tonight due to Senor del Toro being in the news. I heard it mentioned on here before. What a wonderful film. There seemed to be a lot of religious symbolism in it. Maybe socialism fighting against old Spain and religion. I had a few beverages and it was a lot to take in. Don't know what the bomb meant.

Fantastic film coda. One of my favourite ghost films.

Saw Wreck it Ralph a few days ago, just wonderful, loved every minute of it.

Also caught Hotel Transylvania which was great, The Unborn which was mostly average and He's just not that into you (surprisingly decent).

Got Cloud Atlas on blu ray to watch tomorrow night which I'm very much looking forward to seeing.
