How familiar are you (and your cohort) with classical British liberal philosophy? I studied political philosophy at university, so I’m relatively familiar, although by no means an expert … this “classical liberal” thing that keeps doing the rounds on the alt right “critical thinker” circuit is largely anachronistic nonsense that cherrypicks bits and pieces from different writers where convenient to an argument. I think they like using the term “classical liberalism” because it implies society took a wrong turn somewhere, and that they are returning to first principles. In reality, the flaws and contradictions in Mill or Smith or whoever someone wants to lump in (you see Friedman too) have been discussed at length in mainstream academia ever since … and that’s not to say these guys weren’t great thinkers - for sure they were geniuses - but idolising specific people instead of addressing their ideas and the critiques of their ideas is why we end up with stuff like the cult of Peterson. The problem is that nowadays “classical liberalism” tends to be a euphemism for a kind of alpha male libertarianism, more in line with Ayn Rand than with J S Mill. It gets caught up in the same contradictions as libertarianism - ie societies and communities *do* exist, the state / public sector provably delivers some things more efficiently than unfettered free markets, and there is a social contract that needs administering through democratic institutions and means we have a mix of rights and obligations as citizens. Lobster mating behaviour hasn’t massively helped me work through those ideas in my own mind, but as I said, I’m not an expert. 9
StefanAVFC
Carl Benjamin classes himself as a ‘Sensible Centrist’ so I really think we shouldn’t be listening to what people class themselves as, and look at their politics instead. Jordan Peterson is a few classes above so that stereotype is certainly wrong. There's an extra hot corner of Hell awaiting Alex Jones for what he put the Sandy Hook families through. Absolute human sewage.

Chindie Posted September 19, 2023 Author VT Supporter Share Posted September 19, 2023 Jones is a completely vacuous waste of oxygen. A pure grifter who peddles right wing Christian hatred through the lens of ridiculous lies as a means to make himself very rich. One of those people that you would genuinely celebrate the death of. He's horrific. He's probably too comical to compare to Peterson though. Peterson isn't peddling stuff that is obviously, clearly complete bollocks (I recall listening to Jones pushing a guest that genuinely believed there was a secret military base underneath Galveston Texas that contained weaponised attack baboons. He also openly stated that children were being given fruit juice that made them gay), he has a veneer of legitimacy, and deals in superficially 'high' concepts, but uses that to attack those he dislikes. Which basically, shock horror, boils down to everything right wing conservatives don't like.

I love listening to Alex Jones sometimes, not the hurtful stuff like the Sandy Hook comments, but when he goes off on passionate rants about chemicals in water turning frogs gay, I find it hilarious, the man is comedy gold at times. I googled him and saw the venom and the hate and the bullshit within a minute. Then, no offence but @Rugeley Villa states he likes him and thinks he’s compassionate. It’s scary out there. I listen to the Knowledge Fight podcast, which covers him and his shit and debunks basically everything that comes out of his mouth in an amusing fashion. The episodes where they got access to the deposition videos of him being questioned over his and his company's horrendous actions over Sandy Hook are gold. Extended sessions of a hate filled word removed being skewered by a series of lawyers who had true professional disdain for him and his company and it's staff. Then remember that there's a significant population of people that think he's a messiah figure, a thought leader who should be listened to to direct the way people live their lives at every level. Who can sell multiple volumes of books on rules to live by, who attacks everything he doesn't like which veers from trans people to anyone he doesn't personally think is attractive. He's horrible.
