I think you’re asking for perfection there, he’s not Jesus Christ

No, he’s a scumbag to people he perceives as the enemy because they think different to him. I had a scroll down a single day of his twitter ramblings and he’s a nasty piece of work.

When I first encountered him I found him to be contentious almost for the sake of it, but now I see him as a very sincere man trying his utmost to spark awareness in a world that's losing touch. Oftentimes he speaks with more authority on matters than I think he should because while I appreciate his concerns and intent is from a heart that wants to contribute in a meaningful way, I don't think he's entirely across all the answers of the matters he speaks on. Which is great!! We learn by engaging what we don't know and seeing if we can't bring about greater understanding of what's true. Sitting on our hands and letting the experts and specialists do it for us is a sure way to see that society's skilled people become lesser available.

Seriously?

You genuinely believe that?

Yeah, I do.

I see his being a clinical psychologist with a platform to exercise his views that he is better informed than most of us, as difficult at times, certainly when I feel he gets it wrong.

I will credit him with what's highlighted though.

Yeah I'm sure it's nothing to do with making a ton of money from his cult like fans. Some of whom have been pretty threatening to those that criticise him.

People say he’s saved them from attempted suicide and has helped them with addiction and mental illness . I’m yet to hear someone say he drove them to suicide. The man is a god among men to some people and not all those people are right wing bigots of thickos.

Sounds like a cult

I bought his book after seeing one of his early interviews when he seemed fairly interesting and much better prepared than the journalist.

The 1st chapter was about Lobsters which, apparently, if they don't get a mate the first time they try and chat up a lady lobster they end up at the bottom of the social ladder for all of their lives. It was absolute horseshit and had zero relevance for me as I have no wish to have sex with a lobster or any other crustacean for that matter. I didn't read anymore and threw the book away - it was all psuedo science/psycho BS. But it became obvious to me why he's become so popular with the incel crowd.

And to those posters talking abut his compassion. I have seen (or endured) some of his videos where he laments the agony of young men he's supposedly treated who just want a girlfriend (although when he last practiced psychiatry who knows.) He always cries as if he is so sensitive and it is all so painful. It's a grift. He repeats the same role every time. He's a grifter and he's found his audience, the lines that work and the act that gets him the $$$.

Never heard that word before until on this thread

Trump is a grifter. Russel Brand is a grifter. Creating a personality cult around you where you and only you have all the answers therefore give me money/slash buy my merch and you will understand and be safe in the world. Peterson is a grifter.

Or con-man is the old fashioned word.

Does he not offer a genuine service to people though?

Is Snake Oil of any use to anyone?

I'm sure some who bought so thought that it was. In medicine it's called the placebo effect. If you believe it's good for you and you do it, then at least you think you're doing something positive.

I don't know what he was like as a psychiatrist. Does he still do that. or is he just an alt-right talking head now?

I believe he’s had a very positive effect on some people . I wouldn’t describe snake oil along side his professions, surely you have to acknowledge he’s a very intelligent man who’s genuinely tried to help people or does the other stuff get in the way of that .

That's how grifts / cons work. Take a little little bit of something real and turn it into something that it never was order to make money (or power). All cults start with a personality..

Here's a lecture from Peterson ...  The preceding lectures Ieft me disinterested or not agreeing. The subsequent lectures in this series are what I would want from a lecturer. And this is coming from someone who disagrees fundamentally with Peterson.
