useless
Bale seems like one of those links that people boo-hoo and then he goes somewhere else does okay after which people reflect and think 'he wouldn't have been so bad after all'. As long as it's not on ridiculous wages, I don't think it would be the worst signing, truth be told he'd be one of our best players for the games that he's fit for. People question his fitness and commitment and maybe rightly so, but it's not as if we're going to sign him if he can hardly play, or if he isn't commitment enough, that stuff will be looked into. Not really bothered if we sign him or not.

We're just in the usual lull, the pre contracts are done, the transfers that have been agreed for months have been announced, the players that were available have moved, now its waiting for the internationals to end, the players to return from holiday and those transfers that are held up by moving parts The windows barely started yet

We aren’t just competing with teams that are standing still, teams above us will be improving and it’s going to be a challenge to get top 10 if we are done, which I think is far from the reality. We still have some more transfer activity to come imo.

We lost too many games playing rubbish, rather than being out fought.

The Bale thing (related to Villa or not) is not about him as an individual or commitment in that sense, just that he has openly said he just wants whatever will have him in best shape for the World Cup fitness wise - so likely a game every couple of weeks and an individual training schedule. I’d be fine with it if it fit Gerrard’s plans but I can’t see it.

Popular Post OutByEaster? Posted June 18, 2022 Moderator Popular Post Share Posted June 18, 2022 The Bale one is really weird. Quite a few reasonably sensible people seem to think there might be something in it, but for me there are some key things that don''t add up. The biggest of those is that if we're signing Bale, we're completely throwing away our current shape, pattern and plan. Where would he play? For me there are maybe three spaces for him - as one of the front two in replacement for Ings or Watkins in a 4-1-2-1-2 - as one of the two tens in replacement for Buendia or Coutinho in a 4-1-2-2-1 - as left back in replacement of Digne I just can't see any of those working out - he's not really a striker and it would be an awkward fit, he'd be dropping into the spaces that Buendia or Coutinho operate in or getting wide and getting into the full backs way. He's not really a ten as naturally as the two we have and he'd be wanting to get wide. Left back would be his most natural position in the way we play - but Digne is the managers choice and it's hard to see a situation where he's suddenly going to drop him. So, if we were to sign Bale, given that he'd most likely be the highest paid player in the team, we'd be most likely be reverting to the 4-3-3 we played under Smith - which means the fullbacks being less attacking and more defensive (which suits neither) and means that Bale would compete with Coutinho down the left. So essentially, he'd need heavy wages, we'd need to change the entire philosophy of our football, and he'd be competing with one of the players that the manager has signed himself for game time. Nothing about it makes sense. But there are sensible people talking about it. Personally I'm baffled by the idea - a hugely talented and high profile but injury prone left winger with commitment issues wedged into a team that doesn't play with wingers. Not for me.

jim
I wouldn’t mind Bale and I don’t think his sage demands would be as much as we think. He wants to be ready for the World Cup and he is very rich man. I’d just question his commitment to club football these days. Can see him rocking up at Cardiff.
