For me, probably Kamara, because he can also play CB.

Two positions sorted.

You also know when someone's positions are DCM and CB they are only interested in defending and that is what we need

I think they are similar to us in terms of ambition and wealth, it is an equal footing. It will be a slow builder.

I was with you until this, they dwarf us in wealth, their ambitions will be larger and they've already over taken us in the league, they'll be fighting to be up there quickly

They have only overtaken us in the league because our manager is wank

I could see Guendouzi be a player we are interested in

I'm sure many will disagree, but I thought he was class most times I've watched him play.

Just a question of if he can be a bit less of a nutjob.

I honestly don't know what to expect this transfer window. I want to be enthusiastic, but then I remember our activity from last Summer and it fills me with dread. Not least because it showed a lack of preparation and footballing expertise within the club. I had very little hope at the start of the season as some posters on here can attest to. Here's why.

Top Line: The club didn't know/expect Grealish was leaving. And that fuc**d everything.

We went into the window in a strong position. Genuine challengers to the top 8, one of the best players in the world, and off the back of a really good points haul - albeit we finished 11th.
The window started excellently. We bought Buendia who I know still divides opinion on here, but it was an excellent signing given we beat Arsenal to his signature. We had someone to complement Grealish on the right side and he slotted almost immediately into our 4-2-3-1/4-3-3 formation. At this point, I was expecting another solid window.
The club then gets word Grealish is leaving, something they didn't expect given the exposure they gave him during the kit launch, and they panic. We then go and sign Bailey - a player who prefers to play on the right hand side and in exactly the same position as Buendia plays? Why? We already have Buendia there and Traore, who, I don't rate but understand he has a place in the squad and is probably a reasonable back up. Bailey is an exciting talent but he doesn't fit.
We then go and sign Ings. Why? This goes against everything the club wants to do in terms of sell on value, reasonable wages, long contracts etc. We can argue on here all day about having two good strikers at the club, but we're an 11th place team with some glaring deficiencies in other areas of the side that need urgent attention. Why go and sign another striker to compete with your record signing off the back of a very strong season playing as a lone striker? It's a panic move and it's a bad decision.

After Grealish leaves, we then hear the famous Purslow interview about signing Ings, Bailey and Buendia to statistically replace Grealish' output. We don't sign any more players and the window shuts. We're left with two right sided forwards and a striker who doesn't suit our system. We haven't actually bought a left sided player to replace Grealish and we haven't bought any midfielders - an area that obviously needed improving. The season starts and everything mentioned above, becomes a problem for Smith. We start playing different formations to accommodate Ings and Watkins who play awfully together. We're playing Buendia as a 10 and everything we'd built the season before, had crumbled to try and accommodate and justify a downright awful transfer window. Oh, and teams are still walking through our central midfield - Imagine the shock!

What we should have done when Grealish left is spend the money on a left sided forward to replace him. Play Buendia on the right where he's excelled for Norwich and sign two new central midfielders to sure us up in the middle of the park. It was painfully obvious to see at the time and doesn't fall into the category of 'hindsight is a wonderful thing'. It was fu**ng obvious at the time. The squad was left with a massive imbalance. Two 'top' strikers, three/four right sided forwards, no left sided forward and no defensively capable midfielders.

That's why I'm nervous about this Summer window. We sign players that we don't need, that don't fit a system and we continue to neglect areas of the side that desperately need improvement.
Honestly, if we don't sign at least two defensively minded midfielders then you can forget any kind of success next season.

Rant over. Sorry for the long post. Like I've said before, this Summer will at least be exciting even if it's reckless.

Bang on. 👏

I’m just hoping we get it right this time and for some reason I’ve convinced myself that sorting out midfield is the priority, at least from SG’s view.

My main concern is how we are going to attract players of the quality/level we need if the season continues to peter out and we finish in a lowly position with no positivity or signs of progression and improvement. I can’t see what’s going to attract those kinds of players to us over the competition and higher placed teams.

Maybe I’m too gullible but I am looking forward to the window, haven’t been enjoying the season all that much so at least there’s that to look forward to.

If we manage to put in some impressive performances and get some good results then I will be much more encouraged, I just don’t see any signs or evidence of that happening but I’m always open to being pleasantly surprised and just want us to kick on asap.

Also, can we please make Buendia a mainstay of the side and not risk unsettling him? He has so much to offer…

As ever, the solution to our problems mainly seems to be to sort that midfield out. To strengthen and solidify it and make us better at keeping the ball and dictating play. Other departments will perform a lot better then, I am sure of that.

Look how heavily we’ve spent on our attack. Why have we neglected midfield so much and for so long? I’m confident we will at least try to address that now but am worried we will miss out on our priority targets unless we can start impressing on the pitch…

As ever, here’s hoping…

With the talk of Suarez possibly signing and joining back up with his former teammate, I thought I'd take a look at who else is still playing that would have been on Liverpool's books while Gerrard was there. Not saying that I'd take all of these at Villa, but I wouldn't be surprised if one or two joined in the summer.

Goalkeepers
Peter Gulacsi (31) - RB Leipzig

Defenders
Alberto Moreno (29) - Villareal
Sebastian Coates (31) - Sporting CP
Conor Coady (29) - Wolves

Midfielders
Jordan Henderson (31) - Liverpool
Luis Alberto (29) - Lazio
Lucas Leiva (35) - Lazio
Victor Moses (31) - Spartak Moscow
Jonjo Shelvey (30) - Newcastle
Ryan Babel (35) - Galatasaray

Attackers
Raheem Sterling (27) - Man. City
Suso (28) - Sevilla
Iago Aspas (34) - Celta Vigo

Some of the ages/clubs might be wrong, but there's a lot of experience in that list. We probably couldn't attract all of them, but Gerrard would've had a big impact on many Liverpool players during his time there, so I'm sure he'll have a fair bit of pull.

I wouldn't mind a couple of them along with a few younger players, if the deals were right financially, but there's always a risk that we repeat the mistakes of summer 2015, as others have mentioned.

Does anyone think that we should/might try to bring any of these in?

I have no doubt they have big ambitions and a large wealth fund. Their wealth means very little now with the regulations in place and them being able to access that wealth through linked sponsorships etc.  NSWE have big ambitions too but because it is associated with little Ol' Aston Villa - it means nothing to the media. Newcastle are also walking a political tightrope with the Saudi links too. The current league table means nothing imo, we haven't played in 10 days and they have played twice. I am backing NSWE against the Saudi boys. I have no doubt Newcastle will be a challenger now but not a destroyer. They won't be like City IMO.

Good post, @Delphinho123.

The summer window and the Gerrard appointment make me question Purslow's judgement. I know he's impressive in other important ways, but while the jury may still be out on the manager, the window was almost a complete farce, and that is very worrying indeed.

If all 3 was at Marseille I'd imagine we would be scouting multiple players not just Kamara.

Pape Gueye maybe? He didn’t have a lot of time yesterday but he’s a decent player too.

Kamara and Bissouma as midfield signings would transform our team, and would not cost that much. Certainly less than the farcical reported sum of £60m just for Kalvin Phillips.

A midfield three of…

—————Ramsey—————
Kamara—————Bissouma

is certainly a mouthwatering prospect.

Possibly, but I’m of the opinion that if all three were there, they were also meeting either the player himself or at least the agent. It seems very strange Purslow was there.

Kamara on a free never gonna happen. He'll have offers from better clubs sadly.

I really think Kamara, Bissouma & Phillips are players we won't get. They will be in demand from more attractive clubs.
