I'm confused. Have Newcastle announced a transfer this evening? Something ain't right here.

They nearly announced a few. They made a lot of progress in various discussions but then with the player or the club told them to F off. Latest rumour tonight was that Ash Young said he didn't want to join them (I am not joking)

We now have a starting eleven that is filled with really competent premier league players. The next task is to have the bench at a not too different standard to.the firs team. If Digne gets a knock we now have Targett, if Konsa is out we now have Chambers etc. Its looking much stronger collectively now after this window.

I smell a good cup run next season

I'm completely with the underwhelmed and never impressed with with him sentiment on here.

I just can't for the life of me understand why we haven't signed Ruben Dias on a free to be our 4th choice centre back.

Gerrard is nuts, this guy will flounder trying to replace the mighty, all action Tuanzebe

i agreed with everything you said 100%.....right until the end....

Strange one due to it being secret (again, incredible) if we'd have spent the week linked to him I think this thread would be very negative but realistically as 4th choice CB and cover for RB he's OK, nothing more nothing less, the cost of the deal sounds good

Think more than anything it buys us time which isn't something that fans necessarily want to hear, says to me that we like Feeney and Kesler, maybe kerr too already

Literally never heard of this guy. I thought he might have been an academy signing when the announcement popped up on my phone.

Might pop over to Twitter and read the unimaginative trolling from Arsenal fans before deciding what to think.

I have heard of him, but I thought it was gonna be another Aaron Ramsey case where we just signed another kid for the academy who had a similar name to an Arsenal player. Nope, it's that Calum Chambers

I am not at all happy about this transfer. It just seems wrong.

WTF were Villa thinking?

It is not Wednesday. This is unacceptable.

Welcome to a proper club Calum.

I don't hire people who only see positives. I hire people who are able to see the negatives too. Finding the solutions is the easy bit, identifying the problem is the tricky bit

Fair point. Solutions is what I hire for. Anyone can see problems and run around panicking about them. Agree I don't want blind optimists they are as delusional as the people running around with a black cloud over their heads thinking the sky is falling :) I just want professionals who can calmly identify a problem and come with solutions.

Jesus Christ, he don't half like to ramble doesn't he!

Man of few words, likes to do his talking on the pitch😉

I've got a good feeling about this, no reason too, just a gut feeling that he's going to do well for us. He's under achieved for his potential, hoping he's a late bloomer.

I have a strange feeling that Chambers could turn to gold and be our best signing of the window. I have no reason for this other than a few cans of beers and in the back of my head Chambers is a quality player of international standard and Gerrard et al will get the best out of him

Just saw that he played at DM whilst he was at Fulham and posted some pretty good stats in that position.

😯

was their player of the season, playing as DM.

Yeah, something like that Peter and if we ever fancy 343 he'd be the man in the middle for me. Gives us options. I'd have him over Axel for sure.

From the BBC...

Aston Villa have signed defender Calum Chambers from Arsenal on a three-and-a half-year contract.

The 27-year-old, who has only made five appearances for the Gunners this season, was out of contract in the summer and joins on a free transfer.

His signing follows the arrivals of Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona, Lucas Digne from Everton for £25m and Robin Olsen on loan from Roma.

"It's a massive club and they're in a great moment," said Chambers.

"It's a very exciting place to be and everyone can see that from the outside. Things are happening here and it's definitely moving in the right direction.

"For me, it was a no-brainer to join a great club. It was the right thing for me to do."

Chambers had been at Arsenal since joining them from Southampton in 2014.

He replaces Axel Tuanzebe, whose loan from Manchester United ended earlier this month to allow him to join Italian side Napoli.

Villa manager Steven Gerrard has also been linked with signing Uruguay international midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus.

Chambers added: "The manager did very well at Rangers. He's a young, exciting manager and I can't wait to work with him."

Damn, how bad did we think Axel was if Calum Chambers is an upgrade?

Well for me, pretty damn bad.

We've replaced for free an at best championship defender with someone whose played over 130 PL games and was Fulhams fans POTS pulling 50% of all votes in a Premier League season.

Axel was genuinely average. No one unless clinically insane would give him POTS in the PL.  He was a half decent Championship player but nothing more.
