Not fair to start comparing him. He certainly had enough moves to get past most of the players in the premiership, rarely got dispossessed from what I can remember.

I didn’t mean it to sound overly harsh but honestly, some of the moves in that video are pure sex.

Barcelona apparently are paying up to 80 percent of his salary according to ESPN

The media keeps using all these photoshopped photos of Coutinho in a claret & blue shirt and they pick the photos of him where he looks absolutely miserable.  Not one I've seen so far shows him smiling or happy.

Interesting discussion about Coutinho's career since he left Liverpool.

I think as part of this discussion, its clear why i think he could regain some of that form here under gerrard, as he will get to play in his preferred inside left position and effectively "be the main main and loved again".

He must be one of the best in the world at curling one into the top right hand corner from 20 yards.

He seemed to be doing it every goal he scored for Liverpool in his last season.

Hello all I previously commented on gerrard. I know I know..I’m an obsessive Lfc fan.

However as a season ticket holder I feel in a decent position to comment on these two in particular..

I've been watching developments with villa with interest for obvious reasons and I think this will prove to be a very good signing.

I have to admit I haven’t watched lots of  coutiniho since he left but I can tell you about the player who was at liverpool.

Firstly, by all accounts he is a good lad, not going to upset anyone, speaks English and for us was not injured a lot from memory.

His touch is immense as is his awareness, close control and skills in tight positions. His other main strength is his shooting from distance both from dead balls an in open play.

I would say the other thing that helps with him is he can press and he does work hard. He isn’t just some number 10 who strolls round the pitch.

The general criticism of coutiniho from liverpool fans was that certainly for the first few years he was inconsistent. He could put in a 9/10 performance then 2x6/10 performances and that seemed to be the cycle. However in the last 2 years I think it was or certainly 18 months (an bear in mind he was young) it became near enough every game he was immense an for me he was probably along with hazard the best player in the league at that time.

You don’t go for 145m if you are shit an he wasn’t a flash in the pan like a dembele for instance.

yeh it worked out for liverpool as we sold him an bought Allison an van dijk who based on our American owners track record we would not have bought without the sale.

However at 29 I see no reason why you cannot have 4/5 years of coutiniho. The fact gerrard will build around him will help too an I suspect he will be a success.

ps from reading a number of these threads over the last couple of months you aren’t the most optimistic bunch are ya? But on this one I think you might be pleasantly surprised.

After we were linked I started watching his Barca and Bayern highlights to get a better idea of what sort of player we're getting, and even though he's no longer at the level he was at for you, he's still far better than what we currently have. Even if he takes a bit of time to get back into the groove, he will be great for us and I have little doubt about that.

Also, if you'd had to witness the level of baffling insanity we've had to put up with over the last few years, you'd be a little on the pessimistic side too. We've been burned before. We had similar conversations to these about Barkley back when he signed, and he ended up being a lazy player who clearly didn't care.

As long as Coutinho isn't like that, which by the looks of things it seems like he's the exact opposite, the Villa faithful will quickly grow to love him.

I think with Barkley it was ALWAYS more hope than expectation. I think with Coutinho it's more expectation than hope.

Barkley wasn't as bad of a signing as sometimes made out, he faded, but played a big role in our good start to the season not just in terms of his performances but also us signing  a player like him would have lifted the other players, it was another sign that we were on the up and going for an higher class of player. And without that good start, it would have been a very different season.

He started out very good for sure. Then he got injured and he just didn't seem to come back. It was almost like he didn't even try at that point. Unfortunately, that's his legacy here.

Barca still not shed enough off their wage bill to register Ferran Torres :crylaugh:

Probably an indication that we are not picking up a very large portion of his salary.

i think we are paying all of his salary, but he took a substantial cut to allow us to cover that salary.

I wonder if barca have any other good players we could sign on the cheapo?

How would that work?

Edit. Gavi has a €50m buy out clause and only earns €1600/w. Might be tricky to get him here thou :D He's also only 17 y.o, 5ft 7 and about 60kg's. But one Hull of a player.

not sure if true, but i read that, for example:

His salary is 340k p/w, he agreed to take a 140k pay cut to help Barca financially and us pay it.

We pay 200k p/w, Barcelona pay 0k p/w.

Figures are total guess work ofc, but i have read numerous articles about him taking a pay cut, even Xavi said "Coutinho took a pay cut to allow the move to Villa to happen, because he wanted to play".

Not sure of the exact facts tho.

I think Barca will try to spin this deal in any way that makes them look less like morons. They have their members to answer to. If they shed his £380k/w (or €400k/w) they should be able to register Torres no problem, unless Torres is on more money than they claim.

So would Coutinho have agreed to say halving his salary for just the 6 months here or for the remainder of his 18 months he still has with Barca? From what I've read we are paying him about £125k/w or something like that which doesn't fit into this at all.

He was good early on but was also poor in the defeats v Leeds and Southampton. Then got injured v Brighton and came back when we started to lose form.

Not sure he even had 5 good performances for us in the end.

We've got pretty much 20 games left so hopefully player of Coutinho's quality can quickly settle in and be influential in about 10 of them so we'll probably permanently sign him.

Really excited to see how it all works if we can ever get everyone fit at the same time. Opposition will obviously put a man on him given he can create space for himself so in theory that should get likes of Bailey one v one against a full back if we can shift it quickly enough.

I always thought problem with Grealish was we'd just constantly shift the ball to him whether he was in final third so it became a bit predictable even if it worked on many occasions whereas know we genuinely have 3-4 really good final third options if Buendia can improve further.

Even if we can't finish that high up the league now there should be some really entertaining games to watch rest of the season and so built to kick on from start of 22/23.
