His perfect little touches to control the ball and then take it away from the defender, how quickly he turned away from him, the superb placement of the shot in the narrow space betweeen Pickford and the near post, and the power in the shot too... brilliance !

(If he hadn't smashed it on top of getting the accuracy right then Pickford would have had time to react and get a hand to it).

Starting a match means seeing out a gameplan for 90+ minutes, which can often involve an element of playing with a certain level of restraint.

We can all see that Buendia has a lot of talent, but he's also fiery and can become erratic. He has the capability to play a pass that very few other players would even see, but that also comes with the caveat that he can give the ball away a fair deal. This has the knock-on effect of becoming frustrated, which also affects his game.

When coming on as a sub, there's probably ⅔rds of the match already gone, and therefore his rules of engagement are somewhat changed. The need to be reserved is less important, meaning he can try to do what he does best - play on instinct to make a positive impact.

Being realistic, if Buendia was consistent then he'd probably be courted by the top clubs in England and Spain. He's not, hence why he's stepped-up to a club where a midtable finish has been our biggest highlight in a number of years.

If Emery and the team can coach some maturity into his play, he'll be even more of an asset. However, as others have said, it's a squad game. Coming off the bench doesn't necessarily mean you have a lesser role to play. The players need to do what's best for the team to have a winning result by the end of the game.

The ideal scenario for signings for a club like us is like you said..

Someone super talented but not consistent but we then turn into someone more consistent. Or someone young that then turns into a bit of a star.

Yeah, the commentator on the clip I saw of the goal said he could have gone for placement or power and he went with putting his foot through it.... well yes, but also placed in an opening that was not much wider than the ball itself.

Quality finish.

Great post.  Also, typically more space opens up around the pitch in the 2nd half when legs get tired and subs change the original tactical gameplan of both teams.  Buendia at Norwich was deadly when given time and space to pick out the right pass, but oftentimes in the Prem he gets tightly marked and muscled off the ball before he can do anything with the ball.

To your point about his maturity and frustration, he strikes me as a player always a bit naïve tactically.  I think it's because all his past managers gave him a lot of freedom to just be himself on the pitch, because for all his mistakes at times, he's always had that "moment of magic" in him which wins games.  Little bad decisions he would usually make under Smith or Gerrard like backheeling to a teammate in our own box, or going down way to easily trying to win a soft foul while our team is overloaded forward causing an opposition counterattack, etc. have started to be cut out these past few games.  His decision making is starting to improve and I think he's starting to finally get that high level coaching he needed to be successful in the Premier League.

Must be a shoe-in to start against Palace instead of Bailey.

Great attitude from Buendia again

It's his attitude that really set him apart for me, he wants to win and compete, we need a few more like him to give us the character we require to push on.

Exactly, it was placement and power. Which is big trouble for a keeper.  : )

He must absolutely loathe Steven Gerrard. If Unai was it manager from the start he'd have a WC winners ball right now.

Or maybe he accepts he wasn’t good enough at the time and doesn’t loath anyone.  Happy for him on his call up but he has call ups before and he never featured.
