We need the in form Bailey or the upgrade over the summer on Bailey. Without it, our attacks are stagnant if opponents are intent on parking the bus.

The lack of width on the right keeps us rather one sided and all our best attacks end up coming down the left.

Isn't that by design. Think it's Emery set up even before Villa

In theory Bailey should work in that position but the problem is he doenst have the composure that a player like Saka has and also he just isnt as good. With the way we play it would be great to have a right footer on the right so the player doesnt have to slow things down amd cut back. We saw on Saturday with Baileys assist that getting to the byline and crossing with his right is far more dangerous than hoping Bailey cam beat his man and cut in.

In a way - but even if the best attacks start on the left - that will often leave Bailey isolated on the right so when the switch comes - he needs to be able to take on his man and beat them 1v1 which he currently isn't.

Same concept if he has the ball on the right. He needs to be able to attract defenders and then play the right ball to quickly switch it to the left side overload.

The best examples of this are Dembele/Raphinha's role in Barcelona and Mahrez on the RW for City and Saka for Arsenal. Rarely will the fullback on that side overlap so there's a lot of play left up to them on the right and they need to be able to beat their marker 1v1 when the switch comes to them or play the right combinations to have a quick switch over to the left side overload.

In this concept - the right winger is left footed by design (Dembele/Raphinha at Barcelona, Mahrez at City, Saka at Arsenal) so he can threaten both directions but Bailey is often reluctant to do so.

Must admit I'm really enjoying the slow-build and passing out from the back, a contrast to the 'hot potato' football of recent times.

Again it is all confidence.

It is an art form the way Villa played with the ball, waiting for the opportunity to pass when an opposing player is committed and this philosophy of baiting them into an attack.

Then when we decide to go it happens so quickly...

Surely this is a Gerrard 'moment of magic' rather than emery ball

Jacob Ramsey will be an home grown next season as will be older than 21, at the moment he doesn't count towards the home grown quota because he's an U21 and therefore doesn't have to be named as part of the 25 man squad.

Sinisalo I think will be still considered an U21 next season, at least until January, as will still be 21 when the season starts, which if right he won't be named as part of the 25 man squad at the start of the season even if we're intending to use him as back-up, just as Ramsey not been named as part of the squad this season even though he's a regular starter.

Also I think people get confused with the rule, it isn't that you have to name 8 home gown players no matter what, it's that you allowed a maximum of seventeen non home grown players, and then if you want to name a full 25 man squad the rest of them have to be home grown, but a club could just name say a 22 man squad if they wanted with five home growns, but could still have more players than that available taking into consideration u21s.

Taken from the premier league squad website….

What is a Home-Grown Player?

A "Home-Grown Player" means a player who, irrespective of nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to The Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons, or 36 months, before his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

Rules on U21 players

Under-21 players are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players per squad. For the 2022/23 campaign, Under-21 players will have been born on or after 1 January 2001

So for 23/24 the above U21 rule would be born on or after 1st January 2022

        25 Man Squad 23/24

  9. Konsa (HG)
  10. Cash (HG)          Kesler-Hayden (HG)
  11. Young (HG)
  12. GEERTRUIDA (RB/CB & CDM cover)
  13. Kamara
  14. Dendonker          Iroegbunam (HG)

  22. Bailey
  23. Watkins (HG)
  24. Archer (HG)          Duran
  25.

Bolds are those I think we should sell, the underlined players are question marks moving forward, uppercase are new players.

The squad has potential to be filled out with more quality (if finances allow).

There’s scope to turn it into a decent squad able to compete domestically and in Europe with just some fine tuning.

I see us moving Konsa, McGinn, Buendia, J. Ramsey to more squad players as the squad itself gets better quality wise (longer term).

I think we might be tempted to sell Cash this Summer though.

Claret & Blue Podcast with Jon MacKenzie from Tifo Football discussing Unai Emery's Tactics

Highly recommend this podcast/video published today. Really good, articulate discussion. Not everything covered is new or groundbreaking for those who have been devouring as many articles and videos as they can, but just solid overall.

Some points discussed:

  • Benefits of building up from the back.
  • Phases of play in a modern tactic - a flexible system.
  • Balancing Tactical System with Skillset of Current Players.
  • Positional v Relational football.
  • The importance of the Goalkeeper in this system.

Unai taking advantage of an interim manager and showing a build-up Villa haven't used before this season. Taking a page out of De Zerbi's book - in possession Villa are in a 4222 but with Buendia and JJ occupying the half spaces centrally in quasi false 9/number 10 roles with Watkins and Bailey split wide. This caused Leciester CB's to be in an uncomfortable area of marking no one but if they pressed up too high against Buendia and JJ - it would leave Watkins and Bailey to run in behind. This required a lot of concentration and effort on Mings/Konsa and JJ/McGinn to play with almost 6-7 Leicester players surrounding but the first goal was executed to perfection. Konsa plays in to Dougie who plays a great first time ball to an unmarked Buendia (the CB's elected not to press) and makes the perfect pass to Watkins who is wrong side of Souttar.

Levels above Unai is.

This second half will be a grind though. After being baited into pressing up for Villa's 1st goal - Leicester, much like their co-relegation contenders West Ham, are refusing to press beyond the halfway line now and so Villa are finding it a struggle to break down the low block in a 3box3. Either Villa will have to be more daring in their build up (standing on the ball in their own 18) or we're going to need a moment of magic to break the low block.

This system just works for us. Someo e just said on a podcast that no player is ever isolated nowadays. And thinking about it that is true. There seems to be always options for every player to pass to. In rhe years i have been watching Villa we have struggled with that . Not any more.

We are the only league team in England to score in every game in 2023

Scored in 16 straight league games. That's fantastic.
