If we're correctly not benefitting his next club by ending his first team involvement this season, how low a bid should we accept in August or January? £5m this summer, £3m in January?

We know his potential is greater than those values but why not at least get a few million for a player who has effectively reduced himself to a reservist/U21 squad filler.

Bid guesses aside, I suspect he's got a 'free' move (and it's associated signing on bonus), already lined up.

He can sign for a club abroad for free from Jan.

I'm aware of that but he can't play until next season, is my understanding. It would be worth a new club spending a couple of million to get him playing and integrated for the second half of their season.

Still, as others have said, I suspect he wants to effectively pocket the transfer fee as his signing on bonus and is willing to sit out this season to ensure that - contract signed in January but not playing until July 1st for his new club.

A wasted year for Carney is the result of his actions.

If his agent has convinced him it's better to not play for a year at this stage of his career then he's a fool. Crucial year in his development could have long lasting effects not playing at a level where he can progress for a year. His agent could be making his asset never fulfill it's full potential.

Would be incredibly stupid all round imo, I also struggle to believe that we should be happy getting a fee for him. He should have been coming through into our first team this season.

More to the point he could have a career ending injury in his next training session and have turned down the contract that made him a millionaire and set him for life. That’s the real danger with the ‘wait a year’ at his age.

Playing Russian roulette with his career is a bad move. Its why it is called a pathway.  Seems his representation want to be on the motorway already.

I have nothing bad to say about Carney but i would quite happily have his agent doing beep tests for the rest of his natural life

He can sign a pre contract agreement but would still be a villa player until his contract expires in July 2023

I was told a true story yesterday about a young player at a local club(not the sht) who was offered several thousand pound a week on his first contract with assurances of first team appearances. It would of made him at the time the highest paid kid at the club with a genuine pathway to the first team. The youngster had been told though that a top 6 PL club was interested in him. He turned down the offer at his club, then when the PL club offered him a deal it was a lot less than the contract offered by his club. He then ended up going back to his club who were that pissed off on him not signing the initial contract that they withdrew the offer. That kid is now playing non league.

What are the odds of an 18 year old randomly getting a career ending injury in a training session in the next year? That has to be exceedingly exceedingly rare, especially since he's probably going to be careful for the next year.

I'm sure it won't in his situation but it's a case of how things can go tits up for these kids if they make the wrong decisions early doors.

There's another potential theory to this - based on:

And that what whoever is representing him isn't asking for anything - that in their mind, the longer they let his contract run down, the better it is for him - Villa's offer is on the table, but they 're just sitting on it and seeing who else is going to offer them things.

In this situation, 2. and 3. don't really come into play - Carney's team aren't asking for anything, they're just sitting on their hands because they feel it will benefit them.

The problem in this situation is Carney - he gets thrown under a bus because he's in a sort of limbo while they wait - there's no football thinking in it, just a wait for larger and larger contract offers.

I don't think an experienced agent does that - I think an experienced agent looks after the boy, an experienced agent plays a longer game and knows that a successful Carney will make plenty of money over a long career and doesn't risk that career for the nearest horizon.

Just a theory, but I'm not sure this is about what Carney's people are asking for, it's rather that they aren't asking any questions at all.

I think that is quite feasible.

The danger with any negotiation is, don't piss your opponent off.....because if you do rationale thinking and compromise, goes out of the window.

Setting the bar too high and then playing hard ball, can easily do that.

I suspect, thats what they have done.....and its a hard road back, when you do that.....just a theory of course, based on a bit of what your proposing/speculating.
