Replace the refs with who?

More competent ones, for a start. I mean, how many of them stand out to you even as 'consistently adequate'? Was it about, say, Kevin Friend, Martin Atkinson or Mike Dean that means they still get to officiate PL games?

better refs....

maybe at the start of this thread not sure, my idea would be to increase the number of refs, increase the amount they are paid, definitely increase the support around them and try and make the whole thing more professional, move them all to St George's Park, make it a full time job, Monday morning 1st thing review sessions from the weekend with them all sat in the same room, that should increase consistency, then lunch from proper dieticians and nutritionists, afternoon fitness training sessions with proper coaches, give them a gym, give them sports scientists and masseuses, its takes a team of how many qualified people to put man city and liverpools 22 players tomorrow? how many do that for the ref? don't just shrug shoulders and say the players are athletes, make the refs athletes too! if they have games they obviously dip out but its basically a well paid week long full time job of reviewing footage of decisions and fitness training

instead we get middle aged men sometimes working part time who meet up once a month and are responsible for their own fitness and are paid based on appearances meaning that injuries and poor performances directly impact their pay meaning both are covered up

someone might know this but I've never seen it talked about, who scouts the lower leagues / non professional leagues for refs?

Excellent post. +1

But logically why would they not already be using the most competent refs in the country?  I've seen no evidence that there are better ones in the Championship from our experience there.  Where else are they hiding?

Refereeing in the PL is really about being fit enough to keep up with some of the fittest athletes in the world and getting into the right position to see what's happening.  That's really tough.  Even if you are fit enough you can sometimes get blind-sided, not anticipate something or look at the wrong player at the wrong time.  Add to that, football is probably the sport where cheating is most common, from diving and feigning injury down to small matters such as claiming a corner or throw in that isn't yours.  You then get dog's abuse non-stop from thousands of people just for doing it.

I could forgive mistakes like this with a single chance to see or in real time. Calling that Sheffield United goal offside should be a career ender. It's absolutely indefensible.

why? VAR has done nothing wrong, the guy looking at it has done nothing wrong

the man who made the decision at the start of the season that his big toe being offside is a decision that should be made is to blame, that is how he interprets the offside rule and he now has the technology to implement it

that why VAR isn't working in the PL but is doing ok every where else, we are being **** stupid with it

mike Riley's head should roll long before VAR does

The offside calls are becoming absurd. Firminho last week, that Sheffield United call today. They aren't offside. There's nothing there.

All this is doing is showing that the offside rule isn't compatible with it as things stand. The rule was designed to stop goal hanging, not to have goals ruled out because with 5 minutes and freeze frame reviews and a micrometer, plus some imaginary lines, you can kinda argue that the strikers laces where a millimeter offside for a microsecond.

It's shit.

Another weekend, another catalogue of reasons why it’s making things worse.

Another goal scratched off for a (possible) molecular level offside.

We want to have fewer goals in football right? So in the words of Borat, Great Success.

The Spurs defender shoulder looks to be closer to the goal than Lundstram fingers

Its a waste of time and I genuinely think its turning people off the game

Handball on a Liverpool defender. no penalty given, Plop goes on to score on the counter.

VAR check, no penalty goal stands.

At least we know what tomorrows paper will be focusing on.

Another decision that look very wrong to me. Looked like obvious handball to me.

Newcastle player yesterday didn’t celebrate as he thought he could be ruled offside

Referee was perfectly placed and immediately said no. Must have seen the handball but decided it didn’t merit a penalty

Salah looked offside and wasn’t even a check seemingly.

Agreed, i'm kinda fine with that.

But there just isn't any consistency

Man City should’ve had a penalty instead going a goal behind and then Salah was offside for the second! VAR making up for the Firmino goal last weekend?

It’s actually killing the game. Everything about the sport leads up to that euphoric moment of putting the ball in the net, and it’s robbing that moment.
