Rumors that Putin has offered Zelensky a deal. Russia hang onto Eastern Ukraine and withdraw if he agrees to never join NATO

Just lie to Putin. Nobody will care. Its fine to lie to dictators and betray them.

Sure withdraw to your start lines from Sunday and I promise never to join NATO or to challenge the Crimea and Rebel areas.

Then join NATO and insist on your rights to the Crimea and rebel territories.

But Russia (Putin) views Ukraine as part of historical Russia, he doesn't recognise their legitimacy.

Indeed but its not quite the same. Ukraine is a country recognised by a state by all other states within the international system. taiwan is recognised by a state by something like only 7 or so other states (not sure of the exact number but is tiny) with all others recognising China's One China principle, including NATO and the US. What Russia is doing is contrary to any UN law and its charter set up to stop countries deciding to invade another.

It's really interesting how the right is so divided on this topic across the Atlantic. The Conservatives might have their dodgy donations, but rhetorically they've been turning up the pressure for months (too much so, IMO, but whatever). By contrast, there are tons of Republican politicians and media figures who are either struggling to contain their admiration for Putin, or cynically faking it, presumably because Trump and Tucker Carlson are kings and they want to appeal to them.

Trump's own comments on this the day before the invasion were fascinating:

He really has this incredible knack of saying exactly what you expect him to say but still being surprising at the same time. And no-one can imitate the style of his speaking; 'No, it's very sad. Very sad.'

He's an absolute monster capable of committing the worst kinds of atrocities.

Russian state tv this morning: “The brave freedom fighters from Luhansk and Donetsk are fighting hard against the fascist forces in the East. We think it’ll take at least 5 days to beat them”

Even Russian state tv now has realised that they can’t steam roll Ukraine. It’s actually astonishing that they’re even admitting to being held back conventionally.

Exactly. Putins lied, broke the minsk agreement, said he wasnt invading either. Lie and join nato later.

If Ukraine joins nato there is no chance russia is coming after a nato member. Nato would wipe russia out, or it just becomes nukes vs nukes that ends us all.

Could Putin be trusted with his side of the deal (if such a deal even exists)?

Zelensky won’t have any say in any of this. Russia haven’t gone this far not to change regime. If there’s to be a bargain then the number one requirement now will be for zelensky to go and for “free and fair” elections to take place, of course under the watchful eye of the Russian “peacekeepers”.

My friends in Russia say that there's never been this many people in the street in their lifetime. They've been lied to and now their sons are in another slavic country killing innocent people that they consider a brother people. A friend in St. Petersburg says that they don't have enough capacity in the holding cells to arrest everyone.

Is this the beginning of the end for Putin?

The theories about a chronic lifethreatening illness seem more and more likely.

I see posts on Twitter about a lot of Russian soldiers surrendering the first chance they get. Do you know if it's any truth in that? Would be a huge positive for Ukraine.

I took a look at the local dickheads Facebook feed. He’s been noisy Brexit supporter, and very noisy antivax, covid denier type.

Hes spent most of the 2 years playing down covid and it’s been pumped up the media to keep us in a state of fear. He has a small echo chamber of like minded followers.

The strong feeling about the invasion of Ukraine is that it’s just to distract us and to get covid out of the news.

The same people who have been denying covid and that it’s been the government’s agenda to keep it in the media are now saying the government and media are pushing non events to get covid out of the news.

One also said all these world leaders are mates and it’s been preplanned for ages.

Unbelievable how the minds of some people work, to convince themselves they know what’s really going on.

The problem with this wizard scheme is the 'join NATO' part. There is a 0% chance that they will be offered NATO membership if doing so breaks a treaty with Russia. If NATO members wanted to risk nuclear war with Russia, we'd be fighting Russia across eastern Ukraine right now. We aren't doing that, and that's not by accident.
