Victorian photographs always make me laugh with their stern looks.

I wonder who the first photographer was who said "SMILE"

Ironically the stern look seems to have got back into fashion with the kidz.

Maybe their teeth were so bad from all the cocaine and opium sold at chemists for headaches.

I love some of the Victorian pornographic pictures, blokes with beards, fancy moustaches, monocles smoking a pipe whilst a sexual act is being performed on them

Some of the publications my great grandad used to read were very explicit, those such as 'Slight Hint of Wrist' and 'Reader's Ankles'.

Just for the record, this photo is from March/April 1890. Its either the Birmingham Senior Cup Final or Archie Hunter's testimonial.

Interesting, can I ask what your source is for that? I had that picture and the one below, both noted as having been season 1891/92 myself:

claret and blue | AN ASTON VILLA SCRAPBOOK

Aston Villa 1891-92 (left to right): Charlie Athersmith, George Campbell, Harry Devey, Walter Evans, John Devey, Jack Warner, Billy Dickson, James Cowan, Dennis Hodgetts, John Baird, Gershom Cox, Louis Campbell, John Graham.

Isn't it because they had to stand still for so long to take the photo that it wasn't feasible to hold a massive grin?

Try telling that to my wedding photographer who had me grinning like a loon after our wedding for what seemed like 6 hours.

I have seen that photo with the players names on it:

Players only – left to right:

Dickson, Albert Brown, Clarkson, Jack Burton, Warner, Hunter (recently retired), Harry Devey

Jas Cowan, Coulton, Cox, Allen, Hodgetts

As there are 11 players, we can assume the photo was took probably before a game. Its then simply a case of going through the fixtures to find that 11 which match the photo. Its an unusual team line-up so it can be narrowed down to just a couple of games. It helps being a nerdy Villa fan who likes this type of thing!

Once said to have played with a Umbrella in the rain. Who knows if that happened but when the legend becomes fact, print the legend.

Its 100% true, Athersmith did use a brolly during a match against Sheffield United. It was reported in the Sheffield press. The weather was so bad Jack Devey walked off the pitch only to reappear a few minutes later wearing his coat. When I've got five minutes I'll fish out the match report.

Saw this on Sky Sports website - https://www.skysports.com/football/story-telling/11095/11962173/who-wins-all-time-top-flight-race

"Which club tops the all-time top-flight table in England since 1889?"

Interesting to see Villas decline starting in the 60's, which is summed up in this wikipedia page - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Aston_Villa_F.C._(1961–present)

Yep. We were basically the most successful club in the country for about 70 years.

The game that they all played in was against Everton at Anfield on 4/1/1890. Archie Hunter (below) suffered a heart attack during the game and was taken to hospital. Sadly he never fully recovered and died at the age of 35. A sorrowful fact that I found during my search HEITS.

You’re still scarred by the Richard Dunne era.

Steve Hunt had two spells with Villa.

Thank you, I am not nuts then although I got the opposition wrong.

Strange, my "Aston Villa, A Complete Record 1874-1988" book lists own goals around that time but doesn't record that one.

Thanks for clearing up that conundrum!

I was also just mulling over in my mind why he was making his debut in March,  but of course there was no transfer windows then, he just signed in March! Doh.

Don't forget this was Hunt's 'second home  debut' (he actually debuted in the prev game at Forest) after his spell in the US. His first spell was 73-77  7 apps 1 goal

In fact his first appearance was as a substitute in the 4-0 win at Hillsborough whi confirmed our promotion in 1975.

The last 8 games of that season were all wins scoring 26 goals.
