Gareth Southgate

Have to say, Southgates, at best mediocre club management record, was hardly justification for him being appointed England manager. The FA do have form for these kind of uninspiring appointments though. Guess he does as he’s told and doffs his cap to them. Frustrating, but so predictable from them.

He's still living off the 2018 WC and 2020 Euros, where the only top tier team we managed to beat in those entire 2 tournaments were a below-par Germany on home soil. In a way I almost wish we'd crashed out on penalties to Colombia in 2018.

Casual fans are much more involved with national as opposed to club football so all they see is "first semi-final since 1990, first final since 1966" without really looking beyond that.

The FA probably would have kept him anyway. Worth remembering they kept Capello after the 2010 world cup and Hodgson after the disastrous 2014 world cup where they finished bottom of the group!

Wasn't he also ushered in from the England U21's?

I also seem to recall at first that he didn't want the job.

Shame the FA never listened...   mind you, nothing new there either.

I do wonder sometimes whether Southgate is trying to get the sack. Wtf is that line up.

He’s actually terrible at spelling and wrote in his diary that he wants to get sacked off for the first time in his life.

I do think he's had enough and is on he's way after the Euros, which is why he has stopped listening to any outside influence.

He got the job in 2016 after the Allardyce experiment went wrong.  Came in as a afe pair of hands. 7 years later . Still safe hands but mentally seems like he has lost it.

Gareth Southgate is a dour, strange mirror English men (mostly) hold up to understand themselves. There is so much utter bullshit projected onto him. It's astounding, really. It does him far more credit than any football coach deserves. If only he were a bit more interesting. I think that's what really drives so many English men crazy about him. He's too sane.

There is only one pinnacle, and it's not the European championship, and it's as rare as radium to win it. You know how hard it is. But Southgate is held to a set of nearly impossible standards, and when he mostly doesn't fail, it seems to irk some people even more than losing. It's weird. Damned if does, damned if he ... When his football isn't great, then the conversation turns to culture wars, and his every nuanced word is sliced, diced, and analyzed to a red and white mush.

It's going to be a wait to see whether Southgate stays or not. It's frustrating for 1966 to be so far back in our history now. Southgate is so phlegmatic, too, but he's been getting a bit less so lately, and that has more English people divided, yet again. I think that's never going to change, overall. He won't ever equal Alf Ramsey, we're assured, but even if he did, I don't think it would matter much.

By the way, can you imagine how the completely bizarre, splendidly ****-in-the-head Alf Ramsey would fare being asked to deal with all the shit Southgate does, a man who was more insecure than a three-legged cat chased by a pack of wolves? "Alf, what is your opinion on Israel? Alf, what do you think about oil money and football?" Wish we could have seen that. He would have been sectioned, the poor man.

My only good theory about Southgate is that he reminds too many people of how boring they are.

I think you're being too analytical.

Southgate came in when the England job had been something of a poisoned chalice for some time. It was this way because of so much money coming into club football combined with a set of club managers who actively discouraged their players from being part of the England team. But that's OT.

He managed to build training camps that made everyone feel included and for that, he should be commended. (It also coincided (IMO) with a change of attitudes amongst players who realized that club loyalty was less important than their own "brand."  But again thats another huge topic entirely.)

In 2018 with a group of fairly inexperienced internationals, in a new fuzzy warm and friendly environment, England surprised a few people and performed quite well when given an easy draw/ But ultimately they fell apart when confronted with a decent opposition (which was basically an aging Modric FFS.)

But Southgate became "the one" and the FA persisted. And basically its become a very boring team, led by a tactically inept cheerleader for his buddies, who thinks he's better than he his. Blowing past National League level opposition for tournament qualification is nothing but a money spinner for FIFA, the FA & the TV companies.

As much as @HanoiVillan wants to be positive about him this is only going to end one way. He doesn't have the nouse or courage to win a tournament for England so he will finish a failure. If he does manage to win Euro 24, many of us who see through him will forever argue that it was only because of the amount of talent England is currently blessed with. (which is a lot)

Also, we are on a Villa forum and the guy decided that Middlesborough was a better team to play for than AVFC. Middlesborough FFS.

He's an arrogant cocknose - which would be Okay if he knew football, but I strongly believe he is inept.

2 CBs have a combined total of 138 minutes in the PL this season

Phillips has 70

Trippier has 0 at left back

Journalist: Gareth, you picked 4 players who have played a total of 2 games plus stoppage time in their respective league this season. Could you not find players who are playing regularly for their clubs and in form?

"Muffled mumbling as journalist is escorted away and never invited to an FA press conference again."

I'm not saying he should be subjected to "Turnip Head" or "Wally with the Brolly" treatment. But the amount of leeway he's had is unheard of.
