AshVilla
We were never going to come out and bid 1.5 mill for him were we The max we should be willing to pay for him is that amount so you start lower

BOF Posted January 8, 2014 Moderator Share Posted January 8, 2014 This transfer is a PR minefield for both clubs. Fans on both sides need some serious servicing! It's a minefield for Norwich because it's big bad Villa once again coming knocking and pillaging them. They lose face if they give in. We've nothing to lose. We want their player. We'll try and buy and if we get him, great. If we don't then it looks like petty Norwich hanging onto a small-time grudge. No mines for Villa. If anything, we've walked Norwich into a situation where they can either end up looking small time or else end up losing a very good player

legov
cant believe people moaning about an opening bid. obviously not business people or have a clue about how to make bids If you wanted to buy Ronaldo, would you start with a bid of 750k? If you're not getting games for Norwich you are probably not in that bracket are you? It'll probably end up well if we fork up the right amount of money, every player has a price - especially when he is 31 and not playing games. We know that very well, it's not like clubs are standing in line to get a hold of our aging and unwanted players - the board at Norwich must be rubbing their hands together. They don't care if they have to hold out until the 31st, the price will only be negotiated higher as it always will.

BOF Posted January 8, 2014 Moderator Share Posted January 8, 2014 That's not the point of the post at all though Papillon. How good he is subjectively is completely irrelevant. The point is we want him, so he's good to Villa in that sense. What matters now is how Norwich deal with this. If it's true that he has handed in a transfer request then they're on awkward ground at the very least

Didn't understand that one. He was sold for 80M, Real Madrid probably started at 60M to avoid reaching 100M. If you raise 750k with 1/3 you end up at 1M, which seems about right for a 31 year old not good enough for Norwich at the moment.

Theyre going to be petty and leak out stories like the £750k story. These are delicate times for Lambo FA cup comments and all. In comparison, Norwich do have the bigger minefield to navigate, we have bear traps.... and grenades.
Houlston
Maybe Madrid did start at 750k and that why it took nearly 2 seasons to get done,

That's not even close to being a valid comparison though, is it? The underlying concept is the same. If a player's worth substantially more than the starting bid, chances are the bid will be considered derisory and rejected outright - not to mention that it will reflect badly on the bidding club. 750k is absolute peanuts in today's market. A decent Premier League player like Hoolahan is easily worth double that, if not more. Edited January 8, 2014 by legov

If you'd said "Would you start with a bid of £50m" then you might have a point. You'd then be bidding half (ish) of what Ronaldo is worth. £750k is probably half ish of what Hoolahan is worth. As it is you were comparing a bid of 50% of a players worth, to a bid of about 0.75% of a player's worth

That's ridiculous, when buying a house do you give then exactly what they're asking for? The opening offer is there to find the middle ground.
