Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has made a £1.5million bid to sign Norwich midfielder Wes Hoolahan.

The Villans' Friday afternoon offer will not please the Canaries - Lambert's previous employers - after his acrimonious departure 18 months ago.

It puts a major question mark over Hoolahan’s future, and the Republic of Ireland midfielder may now have played his last match for the Carrow Road club.

The 31-year-old has started Norwich’s last two games, but his place has not been guaranteed under manager Chris Hughton this season so the chance to hook up with his former boss and play regular first-team football could appeal.

Norwich face Fulham in the FA Cup on Saturday, but there is a doubt over whether Hoolahan will be involved after Villa’s surprise approach.

Lambert said this week that he is targeting younger players to add quality to his squad, but Hoolahan could provide some experience and quality for good value for Villa.

I must be in the minority by being excited with this. Can't even remember the last time Villa had a half decent AM. Would love to see somebody capable of creating chances for our strikers out there.

Premier League experience, an attacking midfielder and a small fee. All things that we need. He's not gonna be a superstar for us, but he'll get a job done, can't be too bad a signing in my opinion.

He's also inducted in the Norwich City hall of fame which seems a bit weird.
