2014 Holiday Plans

I went to sunnybeach last June voin, tbh i saw little of the lad culture that i was told was there, other than porn shops on every corner, but beer is cheap in some places, i was paying 1 lev a pint (about 50p) for draft, bottled stuff was more expensive (£1.50) but bottled was a lot better. Weather was changeable, it was either 25 degrees or pissing down, and forecasts were impossible to predict as your on the coast

I've never been, so I was going off the programme they did about it on BBC3. They followed holiday makers and workers whilst they were out and about. It appeared to have all the ingredients you'd need to have a good holiday with the lads: a beach, plenty of bars/clubs, alcohol and loads of women.

Ideally I would have a month or more to explore South America but won't happen with work.

My best friends over there from 6th of Jan to 6th of May, his Dad is his boss though. :/

Anyone advise where would be a good place to go where you could kind of mix a bit of sun with a bit of culture/touristy things in August, in Europe?

Was thinking Barcelona but is there any obvious (or maybe not so obvious) places I'm overlooking?

In terms of places where the low cost airlines go other then barcelona, dubrovnik is a great place. Mix of culture and sea. Malta is another that combines the two as long as you stay near the capital.

by bit of sun do you mean lay down on a beach and catch some rays ?  or just somewhere warm ?

Either or really Tony. I'm kinda leaning towards Barcelona but the missus is thinking Prague.

I was a bit underwhelmed with Barca if the truth be told  so Prague would get my vote of the 2 ...

tbh you could almost consider anywhere in Europe apart from Bratislava  ..

Krakow is worth considering , bit of a long transfer if you fly low frills  but the main square is quite pleasant and it has salt mines and a castle that are worth a visit ( and Auschwitz if you want a sobering experience) .. you will want to shoot the trumpeter after a few days there though :)  .. might not have enough to keep you interested for more than a few days though

there is of course Budapest , more culture than a yoghurt and depending on how long you are staying  you can arrange a transport down to Lake Balaton and chill out by the lake at Siofok for a few days  ( it's about 90 mins away by car)  ... it's a family resort by day and a party resort by night  .. though maybe that's one to do with the boys rather than the Mrs ;)  ... goggle images of siofok party will show why  .. very short season there though so early August rather than late August .. some nice spa hotels there and you can swim in the lake and generally chill out

I was quite impressed with Lisbon when i went there for work the other week and wished I could have stayed longer to explore a bit more  .. plus it's near the beach as well (not sure if you can swim there or not though , the bit i saw was like a major port , but my client said she goes to the beach every day after work in summer so it must be close by )

Florence is beautiful but possibly not enough to keep you occupied for longer than a few days  , Pisa is only an hour away and they are bound to run trips there as well  ..I'd say Venice as well but possibly not in August ( though I have been there at that time of year without any problem)

Bavaria is another great place ..fresh air and the mountains but probably involves a bit of driving which may put you off  ... Neuschwanstein is maybe 70 miles from Munich so you could make that your in out airport and drive around ..added bonus that you can go visit the Allianz Arena

the word is your ostrich as they say  .... of course it's all opinions and someone will be along in a ,moment to say Barca is the most awesome place on the planet and my suggestions are pants

Been Malta a couple of times. I found it an odd place and not somewhere I'd necessarily rush back to anytime soon

Just back from 4 days in Toronto, followed by 4 in DC, followed by 4 in NYC for my honeymoon. 1 evening of showers in NYC but other than that not a drop of rain and the most amazing time seeing all the touristy things (I like them so sue me!)

Will probably try and get away in Europe in mid to late September, 2 years ago did Sorrento at that time of year and was perfect as just wanted to chill out. will listen to people's recommendations on here as they return from summer and see if any take my fancy

went to Vilnius at the weekend

pretty little town , mainly churches , but some remains of a fortress on the top of the hill with a good view of the city  and the old town is very charming  ... bit small for a long break but perfect for a lads weekend with a token bit of sightseeing as you pub crawl  ...  even when i left at 5 am on Sunday for the airport a good number of bars were open and still busy

another visit to an Eastern European genocide museum  ,  the Soviets at their finest !! , probably see it repeated the way things are going

the totty was top notch as well

I really liked Vilnius when i was there. It helped it was a scorching weekend and the totty was superb.

The KGB museum was indeed an eye opener.

Looking at going to Amsterdam and Bruges in the summer and driving between the two. Any suggestions of somewhere in between or within drivable distance that is worth a couple of days? Paris, Antwerp, Brussels? Back out to Western Germany perhaps?

Stop off at Nijmegen and/or Rotterdam for a better Dutch experience
