Media and punditry

Telegraph website not even showing it as a live game to follow tonight - only listing Che vs Tot.

Yet the last two nights they have had the UCL semi finals up

It is not us being precious - they are literally ignoring that the game is being played!

Why is it only former players and managers that are employed as pundits?

why not journalists that actually do their research and know what they’re talking about?!?

As some ex footballers bring some character and inner perspective of being a player or manger, but they often have a pamflet worth of knowledge about clubs their not a specialist in. And often just regurgitate the same talking points as the last pundit.

it’s just rare that I feel more knowledgeable about football/tatics/another club/players  after hearing a pundit talk. I often get that stuff from journalists or podcasters. But they’re rarely employed as pundits

a bit of both would be ideal on a match programming

Carragher vs Keys going at it, two horrible people and throw in the tag partners Neville and Gray makes this a detestable feud

If only was to the death

They go for "names". In reality Jonathan Wilson, James Horncastle, Rafa honegstien, Julien Lauren's are some of the best analysts around.

Exactly, but why not have both… ex pros to have the emotional aspects and the (carismatic) journos giving the analysis

I tend to agree, but the argument against is basically: pundits have different purposes depending on the venue. The purpose of a halftime analyst between the ad breaks is to be a famous face smoothly giving a quick summary so that they can quickly move on to selling you beer and takeaway pizza. People who go into detail are literally bad for this role. The purpose of a MOTD analyst is likewise to be a famous face condensing one main talking point from a match into digestible analysis, so that a] people get the main idea of what happened, and b] people can talk about the game at work on Monday and say something that sounds sensible. The purpose of a journalist on a podcast or long-form radio like 'Premier League Sundays' is to go into detail and really drill down. For that, people need to be knowledgeable and able to talk in depth.

It's difficult to get both on to the same type of show, because Jonathan Wilson is going to struggle to condense his comments into a charismatic twenty-second soundbite and Steven Gerrard is going to struggle to give interesting analysis for an hour.

Ahh good point. Maybe I just want something more interesting from our standard pundit, than a scripted soundbite that all the other pundits say

Dreadful commentary today, in between taking pointless pops at Emi and McPhee and then a needless dig at Cash for not being ready for a sub so early in the game

It felt so petty

Ah yes, the ever so wise David Prutton, who also had a pop at Diego Carlos for complaining for a foul when he didn't fall over. Why do you think everyone dives now FFS!

What made me laugh was the unanimous decisions from the commentary team and pundits that Brightons pen was a pen and ours wasn't 🤣 there were pretty much identical, it's just frustrating more than anything!

Then Brighton score the penalty after the rebound and its oh that will give spurs hope... like WTF? Good save from Olsen but unlucky... nah!

I am sure I read in the match thread about the commentary team saying we will the awful in the CL( I must have missed that unless it was on another "channel 😁" but it's almost like the media really don't want us in the CL because they think we will stink the place out... Manure (hey kinda fits) their darlings did a fantastic job stinking the CL out this season.

They should be celebrating that another club is challenging (like they did with Brighton last season) but there is no agenda, the media have never really liked Aston Villa, I was too young to remember but always remember my dad telling me about when we won the league it was all about Ipswich.

On the verge of top 4 yet we barely gets a mention.

They couldn't wax more lyrical when Newcastle did it

I don't understand why the media would be biased against us? And if it's a London thing, why would they wax lyrical about Newcastle?

I am also surprised people don't spend ages talking about us after we've played in what can only be described as a match of football that technically happened.

We lost 1-0 in arguably the least memorable game to ever have been played.

I agree the media don't care much for us, but you can't blame them this week.

Would the Sky narrative be the "Top 3" if Man U or Newcastle was fourth tho

If there was such a gap between 3rd and 4th maybe.

We are currently 16 points off the top and could end up finishing 4th but 24 points off the winners.

It really is a top 3 this season.

We are nowhere near.

Was never just a top 2 narrative when pool and city was fighting it out.

Top  4 race has always been a hot talking point but now

It's almost like the play to their audience and other teams provide a bigger audience than what we do....

Not sure why there's such an obsession with it, I mean I get that it's harder for us to grow when they limit our coverage and push other teams but are we seriously at the point where we're moaning that the media react differently to man utd than they do to us? Of course they do

if utd were 4th they would get more coverage, if utd were 12th they'd get more coverage

Why? Because man utd provide more of the audience... It's not the illuminati keeping villa down

Spurs dont though especially in UK domestic markets. Doubt a load of Korean fans tuning into Sky or Talksport
