Ashley Westwood

He's just not a box-to-box midfielder, like it's almost physically impossible for him to be good in that role. He's not got the athleticism for that. Though to be fair to him, he does cover the most ground out of anyone in our team. He needs to be played as the deepest lying midfielder with 2 box-to-box midfielders just in front of him (Gana, Veretout) for him (and the team really) to be most effective. I don't know why Tim stopped playing that formation with the 2 #10's as we played our best football in it, but he seems to be shoehorning Westwood into either a 2 man midfield or as a Delph/Gana type midfielder in a 3 with Sanchez. It's odd, and it clearly isn't working.

Is that correct? Seems a bit unlikely.

I don't know if it's true for every game, but in one of our games this season, from memory the Sunderland game, the stream I was watching put some stats up and Westwood had covered significantly more ground than anyone else on the pitch. Something like 12km compared to 10km in second place.

That's from memory so the numbers might be wrong. But 100% he was top.

But like I said that was for one game, not sure if that's true overall. Would be interesting to see if the data is available

Its all very well in covering ground....its what you DO in the ground that you cover......have you ever heard of "shadow Boxing"?

Why do you think it's clear he's been told to take them that way Stevo?

I had a very quick Google and saw quite a few mentions of him taking floated corners for Crewe, it seems to me that it's just his style. I really think we'd look a lot more dangerous if we had some one hitting them in with pace but do have to agree that the manager or the players would have called for a change if they had to much of an issue with it, which is odd considering it appears an almost unanimous issue to the fans.

Because do you really think the manager, coaching staff and players are all unhappy with them? Westwood is happily taking these shit corners and nobody has thought of changing it up?

Maybe it was his choice to take them like that the very first time he took one for us. But he can't be being told to do anything differently, otherwise why would he still be on corner duty?

I don't think there's anything to suggest anybody at the club thinks they're a problem.

My faith in the manager and the coaching staff has got to the point where I am not convinced that they can actually identify problems.

.......my bit of a worry too......I always think, well they know more than me don't they?

Obviously.

But it's still an asset for a midfielder to cover that much ground.

Just as it's an asset for a winger to have pace even if they then don't do anything when they get the ball. That's the point being discussed.

Not only is it correct, he's also in the [url=http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11661/10000327/who-has-run-the-furthest-james-milner-has-covered-most-ground-in-premier-league]top 10 in the PL in that respect.

He is terrible in an advanced role though. Against Sunderland for example, when he gets on the ball in an advanced area or on a counter attack - he is awful. Maybe he should be given a run as the base CM but at the moment I think I'd rather see Sanchez and Gana as first choice, plus one if we're playing 4-3-3.

Sitting 18th after finishing 17th last year and we're having a go at a player for being average. Average is better than where we are I'd say! It's weird though you don't the Alan Hutton thread for example blowing up everday with redundant posts like that.

Spot on. That was exactly my point.

EDIT: I was just far too lazy to explain it like you did. :)
