That's exactly how I've used dating sites, spells here and there of actually putting a bit of effort in, the rest avoiding altogether. Been seeing someone since July who actually replied to me a year after I originally sent her a message. She hadn't been using the site and when she logged on it said the message was new. It was a paid site which I'd only used briefly as I didn't have to pay much. This meant if I wanted to read her message I had to pay to rejoin. Despite being a year I remembered who it was so went for it, if nothing came of it I could use the site for a bit to get my end away. It has worked out really well so far.
