While Mmv has gone a bit full retard about it I do actually think its bizarre and unfair that in this day and age it is the sole responsibility of the man to have to use a large chunk of his savings to show a grand gesture of love while getting nothing back.

For a coming together of two people it sure is a one sided affair.

There is a traditional gender role type thing at work here granted - but you can have gender equality whilst also giving the woman/man you love some sparkly jewellry and a nice party.

I know of couple of couples where the women proposed - the opposite is more usual but it does happen.

Depends on the couple though, I suppose.  Speaking personally, getting an engagement ring wasn't something that I felt was a cost to bear, I wanted to see that squeal of excitement (normally reserved for the rare occasions I don the Frank-N-Furter costume).  The missus never put any pressure on me vis-à-vis an amount I had to spend, how big a diamond she wanted or a timescale for proposing.  From a purely financial viewpoint, both our earnings go into the same account when she earns considerably more than me and if we hadn't had a generous contribution from her parents, we'd still be a year or so away from saving up enough to even have the wedding.  As for getting nothing back, I get to spend the rest of my life with the woman I love without having to tie her up in a cellar or something.  :thumb:

You do know that you can still do that don't you?

Talking of engagements, I went to see the other half's dad 2 days ago. All my mates said they were really nervous and I don't know if it was because I was pumped full of benalyl and Beecham's but I found the whole 'asking the dad's permission' thing absolutely fine. We shared a beer and everything.

Most women don't seem to have much trouble discussing the meaning of getting engaged.

They'll tell you whether they are going to take the guy's name when they get married or not - a lot of women prefer not to.

They will tell you if they prefer Ms or Mrs.

Some will tell you that if they were going to spend £1200 (average for UK) they would probably choose something different to a ring.

Some will discuss their ambivalence about enjoying getting an engagement ring while being aware of its implications.

You can ask them if they would go down on their knees to make a proposal themselves and they have no problem with telling you, No ****ing way!

So how come when the subject is raised with guys they completely freak out?

If somebody feels it's all a bit one sided and doesn't want to be spending money on such presents but their partner does, then I suggest a bit more time making sure you are genuinely a good match might be a good idea.

That's not aimed at any specific individual, that's yer genuine free advice to the world of mens.

Other advice would include:

Yes, do be careful not to piss all over the floor, but don't concern yourself with the position of the loo seat, if it's clean and dry it don't matter.

Yes, sometimes compromise is necessary. But if you really really want to do that thing and she really really doesn't, well you may have to move on rather than sulk for the next 35 years.

Yes, sometimes a quick one up against the hallway wall can be a great and loving gesture.

No, everybody else is not getting rude videos done in the woods, that's just a porn site con trick.

Learn to use the iron, the oven and the washing machine, she is not your new mum, you don't want to be shagging your new mum.

Well, I think I'd be entitled to freak out a bit I if I had to change my title to either Ms or Mrs.

It's pretty messed up that the woman is always the one that wants but the man is the one who has to ask.

In all acts of submission, punishment and psychological domination, the victim always has to ask to be punished and then thank the person in the dominant role, afterwards.

The man proposing on his knees is engaged in an exact same ritual.

You really do spout some drivel.

I think MMV has been hurt by women before. He seems to be EXTREMELY cynical of everything female.

That is about as thoughtful a reaction as calling a feminist a lesbian.
