Smetrov will you ever post a reply without mentioning the ambition of Lerner. Lerner's ambition can only be questioned when the manager is appointed and at this moment no one has unless you know something different.

Quite Right. But he appointed Houllier. And now looks set to appoint a 2nd rate manager IMO because he doesn't want the hassle of appointing a stronger manager.

Again a blanket statement with no factual evidence. Houllier was the best manager and as Trent displayed the majority on here were behind the appointment when he was appointed so what does that say, us fans get it wrong too. I'm not going to get into an argument but i'll tell you what if you think some arab will come and splash billions on Villa, no chance it'll happen.

I think most most fans got behind GH after the appointment. I don't think there was much support before he was appointed. It turned out to be the wrong appointment.

I know there is no Arab waiting in the wings - but that has no bearing on whether Lerner has real ambitions for villa - and by that I mean getting the best bloke for the job - not neccesarirly how many billions he is prepared to throw at it

no van gaal? has he been ruled out?

the list is rather depressing but out of that lot for excitement it would be rijkaard, i think his brand of football would be great. for results it would be benitez as he is the most proven.

however i will vote 'other' and state ancelotti, if not it also covers me for van gaal who would be the obvious second choice behind ancelotti, the only thing stopping him being the perfect candidate is he has no premier league experience

I would not even consider MugClaren a 2nd rate manager more 5th rate if anything.

Ill reserve judgement till the contracts have been signed and we know for certain who AVFC's new manager is.

I just hope for the love of god that it is not MugClaren

A 5th rate manager that won a trophy and got to a european final in his first job in mangement. And recently went abroad and won the dutch league.

Let the games begin....

Has everyone blatantly ignored the post I put up on page 22 with the Birmingham mail article of Darren Bent saying we should get Ancelloti? Idea

Darren Bent: Let's get Carlo

DARREN Bent has excitedly thrown his full support behind Villa’s bold pursuit of Carlo Ancelotti after receiving a ringing endorsement from Chelsea’s stars.

Bent believes Randy Lerner would be making a major statement about the club’s ambitions if he can tempt the sacked Stamford Bridge boss to Villa.

John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole highly recommended Ancelotti to Bent after the record signing sounded them out during England duty over the weekend.

Bent regards Villa as a “humongous” football club with every right to chase the Italian, a four-times European Cup winner as player and manager with AC Milan.

Lerner made contact with Ancelotti’s representatives last week and is waiting for a definitive response about the 51-year-old’s feeling about Villa’s vacancy.

Bent’s £18-24 million signing had an uplifting effect in January and he reckons landing a big-name boss could restore the feelgood factor this summer.

Chelsea’s England stars had nothing but praise for Ancelotti, who was sacked last month despite winning a league and cup double in his first season a year ago.

“I have spoken to a couple of the Chelsea guys and they loved him,” said Bent.

“They thought he was brilliant and if he’s a good coach that’s only going to help.

“The Chelsea boys have just said he’s brilliant. Ashley Cole said to me that he loved him. He said he’s a really, really good manager.

“Obviously when you’re at a club like that you don’t produce the goods sometimes.

“But, even if it’s just for one season, you get the bullet.

“It just depends on whether or not we can get Ancelotti, but if we do get him everyone will be excited about the way forward.

“People might think Aston Villa Football Club can’t get these kind of managers, but at the end of the day Villa is a massive football club – it’s humongous.

“If we can go out and get Ancelotti it shows the capabilities of the club and the direction the club’s going in. It’s exciting to be part of that.”

Bent has spent much of the past week eagerly scouring media reports for an update on the manager situation since news of Gerard Houllier’s departure broke.

The 27-year-old is now off on holiday to Portugal and America for most of June after ending his eventful season playing in England’s 2-2 draw with Switzerland.

And Bent has called on the Villa Park faithful to give the new manager their backing and patience whether it is Ancelotti or another candidate.

“Every day I am checking the news and speaking to people to see who it’s going to be, but you just don’t know who it’s going to be,” he added.

“Mark Hughes was supposed to be in the running, but he has gone out now and I couldn’t tell you who it’s going to be.

“I couldn’t even tell you who is in the frame now because it’s so up in the air.

“I’m sure whoever the new manager is the fans will give him time.

“It’s a big, big job to take and I’m sure the fans will be behind him whoever he is.

Old news - that was before Ancelotti said he was taking a year out.

Is it just me or should we now be seriously worried that McLaren might actually get the job?

I thought we wanted a marque appointment to post a major statement of intent about the club and its ambition.

Steve McLaren???? Eh no...

At minimum it would be a massive PR gaffe.

In reality he is a massively average manager who would take this club back to the DOL era.

Steve McClaren during his time as England manager

STEVE McClaren is NOT the leading contender for the Aston Villa job despite the claret and blues sounding out the unpopular former England coach about their managerial vacancy.

It emerged yesterday that McClaren’s representatives have been approached as Randy Lerner launches a thorough search for Gerard Houllier’s Villa Park successor.

But the Birmingham Mail understands McClaren is not among the prime targets Lerner intends to speak to this week after jetting in from America.

Villa’s tentative interest in the former Middlesbrough, FC Twente and Wolfsburg manager sparked a negative backlash with angry fans besieging message-boards.

Despite lifting the League Cup at Boro and leading the Riverside club to a UEFA Cup final, McClaren is largely remembered for his dismal spell as England boss.

The 50-year-old coach was cruelly dubbed the ‘Wally with the Brolly’ after the enduring image of him forlornly holding an umbrella as the Three Lions failed to qualify for Euro 2008.

McClaren kick-started his career in Holland with FC Twente and won the title in his second season, but even then was lampooned for doing interviews in a ridiculous Dutch accent.

With impressive coaching credentials at Man United and Derby, Villa felt it was important to check out McClaren.

But the claret and blues are still contemplating whether to take their interest any further as they prefer to meet another two targets with Premier League management experience.

Villa old boy Gareth Southgate is not surprised by the negativity surrounding McClaren, but reckons his former Boro boss has strong credentials, along with other contenders.

“Look I won’t put Steve ahead of any of the other candidates that are there, but I will say he’s as good as any of those in the frame for the job,” said Southgate.

“Whenever he is linked with a job there always seems to be a bit of a negative reaction yet if you look at what he has done you begin to think.

“He’s been assistant manager at Manchester United, he’s worked with the first team at Derby, he’s been an assistant for England before becoming the manager, he’s won a championship abroad, and he’s had a great deal of success with Middlesborough, winning them their first trophy, you then start to think, ‘Well why wouldn’t he be in the frame, logically’

“Logically he’s going to be in the frame because of his success.

“Unfortunately, people are always tainted by things that didn’t go so well in their careers, but there’s a hell of a lot of things that Steve has done well.”

Mentions of McClaren’s name in connection with the Villa job have not gone down well with many fans who remember an irate Boro supporter hurling his season ticket at the boss during Villa’s 4-0 win at the Riverside in February 2006.

“I’m not surprised with the reaction because that’s the way we are now,” said Southgate.

“I’ve lived through it, but I would say you’ve got to look at what he has done.

“Everybody improves by the knock-backs you get. After England he went abroad and you’ve got to give him great credit for that for going and winning a title.

“Steve’s a very hard-working coach and he looks to improve all the time.

“But there are equally a couple of other guys who I think would do a good job too.

“I don’t think Steve has got anything to prove.”

It is understood that Fulham’s appointment of Martin Jol yesterday will have no bearing on Villa’s stance towards Mark Hughes, who is still regarded as a highly unlikely outsider by the claret and blue hierarchy
