Shame the English press have ruined the reputation of another good English manager because the England team are a bag of shite.

Regardless of whether we agree about McClaren being a good manager or not, do you honestly think he stands a chance of getting this job?

I don't, not at all. I think there's more chance of Karen Brady getting it - and that's nothing to do with my opinion on him as a manager.

I honestly do. We need to take the clubs finances into account.

Someone like rafa or ancelotti would need funds we haven't got and top 4 promises we couldn't keep.

I think when people talk about bilic,Steve, coyle and Martinez they are along the right lines as to who we will get. Out of that lot Steve is the best one in my opinion.

Well firstly I would argue that Randy has reached a crossroads with Villa in the fact that he has always ploughed a lot in - but not enough for Champions League. I think we will either scale right back now or have a big push, the latter I think being the more likely option. You say we haven't got the funds and can't keep top four promises but did anyone expect us to smash our transfer record with the signing of Darren Bent? I think that was a small illustration of what could be to come at Villa, maybe Randy has realised that with greater risk there is greater reward.

After the Houllier debacle, where from the off he was on the back-foot with fans, I am 100% convinced that the next appointment - whether or not it is Ancelotti - will be designed to wow and unite the Villa fan base. Quite simply they won't want a re-run of the last 12 months and Steve McClaren, whether you like him or not, has been transformed into a bit of a joke figure (rightly or wrongly) and Lerner will know this.

Lerner will also know the reaction to "Steve" on places such as this. I think we sometimes underestimate how powerful a forum like this can be - social media and the internet is a big part of modern life nowadays and to think people at the Club would not scan sites like these for a general consensus would be naive. They will know how unpopular McClaren is and in my opinion that makes him about as likely to sign for Villa as Birmingham City are to ever winning another trophy. Nil.

I just think we are heading into a more conservative phase. The Darren bent transfer was paid for with the Milner money.

I see what your saying about fan opinion but I would also hope the powers that be do not make decisions based on what's being said on the Internet. When they sit down and look at his management career to date I think out of the options that remain he will be a strong candidate.

And if they think he is good enough to do the job then they will predict fan opinion to change.

But if we finish worse off than this season we will all be asking for his head!! then he may be out of a job AGAIN, and leaves us in a worse position, as other jobs will have been taken by our current candidates!

It's not that simple. Fans vote with their feet, if you appoint an unpopular manager then attendances will full and the club will lose revenue from ticket sales and season ticket renewals.

Mclaren is unpopular despite your best efforts, appointing him now would only serve to alienate fans further. Which I'm sure the club doesn't want.

Voted other as i am still clinging to the very slim hope that its ancellotti, but back in the real world i would have to go with moyes. As for the many posts by redman, no-one really gives a shit about your very twisted opinion on FSW, the facts are that i personally would'nt have a real problem with him managing our club as long as he has finally touched back down on our planet?! I dont have the privalage to comment on the many other supporters of OUR club that would not like him here, so you have had your say, please just leave it at that as you are getting very BORING MATE!

Tim Abraham:-

More in @ExpressandStar on Wednesday but #AVFC could well appoint their new man before the weekend...If not sooner.

I had a feeling it would be done by the end of this week. I can't see it going on much longer. I just hope the right appointment is made. It would be a bad start to the weekend if the trumpster aka McClown is appointed come Saturday.

He was spotted early this afternoon though in Birmingham

While I don't really want McLaren I wonder if the seemingly excessive vitriol against his being a candidate has more to do with the embarassment factor than his actual ability to do the job. It was similar last year when Sven was linked with the job. There is clearly a massive cringe factor attached to his performance with England, his faux-Dutch accent and his audacity to use an umbrella in the rain, but he has certainly won more silverware as a manager than Owen Coyle, David Moyes, Wayne Hughes and Roberto Martinez put together.

Just sayin'.

This seems to suggest that it will be Hughes. I would prefer Moyes - mostly because I think Hughes is a bit of a climber and because Moyes has done more on a limited budget - but I wouldn't mind Hughes.

Rijkaard. He's won trophies with Barca, and he can attract big foreign names if required.

Moyes second. But it's almost like he's too much of an Evertonian at this point.

Just can't believe Steve Mclaren is being so heavily linked to the villa....If this happens it will just confirm that we need a dof to do the hiring as Paul Faulkner has no clue what's going on!!!...Believe me the Cleveland browns have been utter garbage for the last ten years...one bad hire after another....Randy don't do it for the love of god!!!

I voted Klinsmann as he wasn't on the list and think he would be the ideal man for us.

2nd choice would be either Hughes or Moyes. I would be happy with either of them and personally don't think there is much difference between the 2 of them. My big concern with Moyes is can he take a club to the next level? or is Everton his limit a bit like MON took us to his limit? he may get money to spend here, but will he be able to use it or is he a better manager when he is made to work on a small budget?

The more i think about it each day the more i get a horrible feeling it will be FSW that gets the post, and that to me is one step above Mclaren.

I wouldn't be upset if we appointed Coyle or Martinez as i think they are both very good upcoming managers that could both turn into excellent managers, they just need a chance, so why shouldn't we be the ones to give them that chance?

I wouldn't be adverse to Rijkaard either as i think he could attract the kind of names we want.

I would be well p!ssed off if we got Rafa as i can't stand the bloke and always told my reds fans that they would never win the league under him, also can't forgive him for the Barry saga and this is why i have a passionate hate for Liverpool these days.

if we get Mclaren i will take up lawn bowls on a Saturday afternoon this season, at least i have a chance of winning and enjoying it!!!

Mate he won the league cup with Boro, which blues won this year and got relegated....does that make Mcleish a better manager than all of them?

He got to the UEFA final by luck more than judgement, wasn't he 4 goals down in both quarter and semi final and threw on all his forwards for defenders and they won? hardly takes a genius tactician to employ those tactics does it..

He won the Dutch league...woohoo, sign him up!

he had a 38% win ratio at Boro & a 23% win ratio at Wolfsburg, now that is impressive!

So yes he has won more than the others, but is that the reason you would like to see him come to Villa? Sorry just noticed you said wouldn't mind him at Villa*

how about this line from wiki...

During a 0–4 defeat at home to Aston Villa, a Middlesbrough fan ran onto the pitch and threw his season ticket at McClaren signifying his disgust at the club's performances.

i think that would be happening a lot if he becomes the next manager...
