Troglodyte Posted December 12, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted December 12, 2012 Messi has been rested in the Spanish Cup so far but it seems he's starting against Córdoba tonight. With all due respect to Barça's opponents, it's a great chance to extend his record.

Troglodyte Posted December 12, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted December 12, 2012 Open goal, and he hits it against the underside of the bar and in. I suppose we should give him the benefit of the doubt at this point though - he must have done it on purpose
The_Rev
Well, if he wants to beat my Sunday league record of 115 goals (set in 2004, which admittedly was a leap year) so he needs a few more tonight!
Troglodyte Posted December 12, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted December 12, 2012 I bet he's a fair way behind if we're only counting goals he's scored on Sundays, too.
Troglodyte Posted December 12, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted December 12, 2012 So, 88 now. Not bad.
Pelle
Read yesterday that the brazilian football association claims that Zico has the record with 89 goals in '79. At least he's a proper player scoring in a proper league. And he was out injured for two months that year. Quite amazing that too.
Qwpzxjor1
Be funny if the Zambian FA finish compiling their evidence and run it to FIFA right as Messi slots in his 109th goal. This Zambian bloke may have scored more but to do it in a top European League is another thing. The record has to stay as a top recognised league or we'll just end up with claims like Rev's (which I'm willing to support if he can get the necessary evidence to FIFA)
Stevo985 Posted December 13, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted December 13, 2012 One of Rev's was an own goal. SO he's really only got

Quite amazing that too. according to wiki he got 65 goals that year, 60 of which were in the state championship, which again is more or less a pub league and im not sure FIFA would allow, would they add messi's goals if barca played in a catalonia league every summer? doubt it

The Brazilian/Zico record includes club friendlies, but as FIFA have recognised those results as part of a record long unbeaten run then (technically) they have to recognise the goals scored in the games too. Hopefully Messi scores again and all this becomes moot.
