... except their defense is their weakness.

Yeah, especially as Onyewu is not fully fit. I expect he started Goodson v Australia to see how he did, knowing he may have to start/bring him on against England next week. Cherundulo is a decent full back, a much better option than Spector who has been dodgy as hell lately. They have DeMerit from Watford who'll probably start, then Bocanegra (probably) playing left back.

They are dangerous going forward. Bradley is a very underrated CM and Ricardo Clark, if he's fit(picked up a late injury in the Aus game), will in all likelihood start next to him. Jose Torres is another option, he looked really impressive against Turkey. Stu Holden is a real good player too.

Then they have Dempsey and Donovan who are the dangermen, along with Altidore, if he is fit, who is a much different player with the US team than at Hull. Edson Buddle, who scored twice against the Aussies, is top scorer in MLS and has 11 goals in his 11 games for LA Galaxy and the US team this year. Robbie Findley is a wildcard, not very popular with US team fans but he looked good against Turkey, his finishing v Australia left a lot to be desired. Herculez Gomez is another wildcard but he has 2 goals in the last 2 friendlies and is top scorer in the Mexican league.

If England play anywhere near their best, they should beat them. But they should not be underestimated as their run in the Confederations Cup last year showed.

I'd be shocked if Fab Cap did not have his team well drilled and "up" for this game.

Be interesting to see what his team will be.

Apparently we have a behind closed doors game soon, during which he will play his first 11 for at least 45 minutes.

I wonder if anyone will have access to that match, or will it be top secret?

U.S need to go 4-5-1 for this and that could be enough for a draw. 3 central midfielders protecting the back 4 while Dempsey and Donovan play wide of Altidore.

When was the last time England won all three group games at a world cup anyway? England will comfortably beat Slovenia and Algeria so suggests U.S game will be a draw.

You mean where they lost 3 of the 5 games they played? That run was very over-rated. They played well against Spain but were poor in the groups and lost over half their games.

I don't think England have won all 3 since I've been watching. Usually if we've qualified or only need a point after 2 we play shit and just take the draw, no idea why.

They beat Spain. You answered your own point with that answer. They beat Spain, ending a run of 15 consecutive wins and stopped them passing Brazil's unbeaten record. They did something not many other teams have managed in recent years.

They also went 2 up on Brazil in the final.

The teams they lost to were Brazil (twice) and Italy, no shame in that.

I was just mentioning what they were capable of, if you want to underestimate them, its fine by me.

Thought he looked the goods, tbh. Very quick and took his chances very well - scoring with both the head and the feet.

Robbie Findley is a wildcard, not very popular with US team fans but he looked good against Turkey, his finishing v Australia left a lot to be desired.

Seemed to get himself into good areas - but, oh boy. Missed an open goal and (if I remember correctly) miss-directed a simple 5 yard pass in the box to an unmarked teammate for what would have been another goal.

Hopefully England will score a couple today and come out without any injuries.

If I was Capello I'd arrange a penalty shoot-out for after the match regardless of the score.

do you reckon we'll get any coverage of this match, and thus be able to deduce the starting 11 for the weekend?

or will all reporters and media be banned, do you think?

Its a 20,000 seater stadium and is expected to be full. Reporters and media will be there too. Capello has said that his starting 11 for the USA will all get a run although no idea if he'll start with that 11 or not.

ah.

bit tricky to have a blanket media ban on that then ... :winkold:

Yeah, he's said that his frst 11 will get at least 45 minutes, so should be interesting ....

I don't know what time the game is happening.

One thing that I don't think is very clever, the reporter this morning said that tickets for the game would be sold on a "first come forst served" basis, there are concerns that demand might outstrip supply and cause security and safety issues around the game. Lets hope not.

There was a crush at a game yesterday leaving 14 people needing hospital treatment. Apparently Portugal had an open training session that was very chaotic due to the unexpected number of people wanting to see it.

King will be playing in this game at some point judging by his comments the other day. It will then be MOnday/Saturday for him which should be ok since he did Saturday/Wednesday/Sunday at the end of the season.

that was mentioned during the mexico game, just for a bit of fun, wembley organisers said no because it was late and people had made travel arrangements so they feared no one would stay to watch, the commentator said other teams can study and learn what our 5 might do

safe to say IMO thats utter bollocks, we should have had a shoot oput vs japan too

Hmm, they appear to be kicking the ball TOWARDS the goal in an attempt to beat the keeper. Take a note of that Guillermo.

i think what they meant was compliling a foster-esque ipod with where lampard/gerrard/barry etc has put their last 5 spot kicks, whereas someone like ashley cole (who IIRC is a great penalty taker) always steps up with half of those watching thinking he'll be shit

kind of like the element of surprise carragher offered when he came on as our specialist penalty taker...

like i said i think its bollocks

The clever part is they won't see our 'kick the ball away from the goal' ploy coming.
