Ooo no VAR!!! Thank Christ. If a goal goes in we can actually celebrate and no pissing around with offsides being massively delayed.

Erm… we kind of rely on VAR for the whole high line, offside trap thing we have going on. Without it, we are vulnerable to conceding goals that should be disallowed for offside.

I think a week off or a few days with then light sessions is enough time off. Players don't need too much time off mid season. We should be playing much of our first team imo because Boro won't be a walkover. Kamara's back, Cash needs minutes, Ramsey needs more minutes, Zaniolo, Duran(if he's staying) Diaby needs a goal or two more.... players need games otherwise we get cold and lose rhythm.

Give Ollie, Konsa, Dougie, McGinn and those that have played the most minutes a rest if we need to but I wouldn't put out a makeshift side. Games like this can go south and unsettle everything. We need to win it to keep up the momentum and confidence levels.

Yeah definitely some positives but given the offside trap we play have to hope the assistant refs get the decisions right!

This is quite interesting actually. I think VAR is the reason inventive coaches such as Emery and Postecoglu are now playing insanely high defensive lines as they know they'll not get punished by a bad linesman's call and can take much bigger risks pushing forward. It'll be interesting to see if he changes things today now that there's no VAR.

No VAR is bad for us. Our whole defensive set up through the high line requires VAR to confirm the offside traps we play for.

The evidence suggests we don’t rely on VAR. VAR has only overturned one goal against us because it wasn’t flagged offside (Garnacho in the Man Utd game). Otherwise the linos have gotten it right: https://www.espn.co.uk/football/story/_/id/38196464/how-var-decisions-affect-premier-league-club-2023-24

SING IT:

"WE'RE ASTON VILLA, WE'RE BETTER THAN VAR"

Happy with that team, a nice mix and still fairly strong.

If Boro’s team is weakened and they are prioritising the League cup tie…

we should… should… beat them easily

Good game for Moreno and Ramsey to get fully up to speed… hopefully they can both keep improving and become essential again. Outstanding last season…
