I find it all very depressing :(

Why? It's just called progress. People were saying the same things about calculators that they are now saying about A.I. Humanity will just adapt. Machines are designed to make our lives easier and better which they do 99% of the time. A.I is just an improvement to the machines.

Problem is, half the class will have the same story!

I'm recruiting for our graduate scheme at work at the moment and they have to submit an answer to three questions as videos. Quite a few have used AI.

I noticed it because one girl was clearly just reading from a screen, and it sounded so generic I guessed it was AI. So I asked GPT the same question and it gave me an answer that was almost identical.

But as @OutByEaster? said earlier in the thread they seem relatively easy to spot at the moment

I don't think calculators had the potential to spread misinformation and lies to the level AI could.

I find it quite worrying to what it could lead to.

This year's elections will be a new low, I suspect, with it being fairly simple to make passable fake photos and audio clips of politicians, and social media misinformation more powerful than ever, and it's only getting worse.

Now more than ever, we need a well-respected and trustworthy media, but the same people likely to look to benefit most from these tools are the same people who've spent many years undermining the media (not that a lot of media organisations have helped themselves). Social media echo chambers are not the environment to debunk this false information, we've seen how bad it's been over the previous 10 years but fakes are more and more realistic.

At least it won't be boring.

There's an argument that AI and "deepfakes" will make people return to trustworthy media. At the moment people seem to believe most things they see on social media, a plethora of new well made fakes and other misinformation might make people realise that social media is not the right place to source your information.

I can't believe you've just compared calculators to AI :D.

I'm willing to accept there's a little bit of old man grumpiness in my response, but I find people asking a piece of software to produce prose pretty depressing.  We're also in an ever-increasingly less connected society as almost everything is done online.  AI will enhance this disconnection.  I wouldn't be surprised if there was a point in time where people (kids, and then maybe growing up) are "friends" with AI characters online rather than actual people.  Those AI people will be nicer, better suited, etc.

But, hey, maybe it's all just "progress".

Why, it's not much different. When the pocket calculator was invented I'm sure people at the time were astounded. AI is talked about like it's this great magic revolutionary thing society hasn't seen before. It's not. It's just an evolution of computing power, that's all. People predicted the demise of the postal service when emails started to get popular.

"I wouldn't be surprised if there was a point in time where people (kids, and then maybe growing up) are "friends" with AI characters online rather than actual people." --> Remember tamagotchi's? A virtual pet. People thought that was crazy at the time but in the end there wasn't a mass cull of dogs and cats replaced by robotic versions.

It’s very different. Calculators perform an incredibly specific role. I’m also sure people were astounded at the time, but there’s a clear limit there. Same as with a tamagotchi - it’s very limited. Great fun, but limited.

There’s been a clear shift over the last however long from kids meeting up to play football - or whatever - to playing football online against each other. You can’t be Mbappe in the park, you can on a game. That isn’t to say kids don’t meet up and play, but it’s far less common now compared to “when I were a lad”. The amount of anecdotal evidence I have of teens having gaming setups and preferring to stay in and game compared to “when I were a lad” is huge; and I remember the joyous days of the SNES 😎.

We (again, not all) also now don’t want to go into a place of work anymore. We’d rather just sit at home working because we have the means to do so.

AI is currently able to fairly accurately replicate images and voices of people. There’s obviously the ability to “create” an entire online person that doesn’t require any interaction from a human being.

It’s not a massive leap to bring this development into how kids socialise, or how people work, and move a further step away from what had previously been considered a normal, integrated society. Why would you need to go out and make friends when there’s a perfect friend available who you can contact anytime and can give perfect responses to whatever you ask/want? Why would you need to work through solutions with people when AI can form a perfect analysis to bounce ideas off?

If you see all this stuff as “progress” then that’s fine. Personally, it feels me feeling empty. I don’t really want that World.

(Also to say, there’s obviously some really positive uses for AI which is why it’s developing so much.)

AI seems to be the new selfie.  Everyone is now solving everything with AI whereas in the main they just seem to be solving most things with just normal computer systems which are now being described as AI.

I am not going to start getting off to graphic imagery of a dragon sodomising a helpless wench when said wench has 5 and a half fingers. Do you think I'm some kind of **** pervert?

I’m finding that as long as she’s not playing a harp or in too big a crowd it’s quite convincing.

As AI-powered image generators have become more accessible, so have websites that digitally remove the clothes of people in photos. One of these sites has an unsettling feature that provides a glimpse of how these apps are used: two feeds of what appear to be photos uploaded by users who want to “nudify” the subjects.

The feeds of images are a shocking display of intended victims. WIRED saw some images of girls who were clearly children. Other photos showed adults and had captions indicating that they were female friends or female strangers. The site’s homepage does not display any fake nude images that may have been produced to visitors who aren’t logged in.

Inevitably.
