If he did have to step up and lead the line for 8-10 weeks in the PL it would be a huge gamble. I think we’ll spend big on a player to take the burden off Watkins with Archer playing cups and Euro Conf. If we get to the business end of the Europa Conference or the cups then Emery will be using Watkins in those games too so he’ll will want a proven deputy to take the pressure off him. But spending 20 million on a backup striker isn't?

I don't understand the need to experiment either. We have loads of money and an attractive project to entice the most promising specialists at the position. Cash himself is not a natural but an acceptable option to cover RM / RB. I sincerely hope (and believe) that a specialist right back is on the cards. I'd also prefer a master and apprentice double swoop and move Cash on. You're not understanding that it's not just saying a position and thinking what that position has historically meant. It's what role are we asking of the player. If we are saying RB really means RCB who of a back 3 in possession and RB of a back 4 when defending then Konsa is well suited to it. He's a very quick player and he's good in one on one defending. He's very capable in the high defensive line as he has excellent recovery pace. His in possession role is limited to build up short passing which he's become competent at. If we said however Left Back. Role is to be a wide forward in a front three on possession and requires pace and final pass creativity. Then out of possession to be the LB in a back 4 defending. That's a completely different role. Emery wants a spread of player with different qualities for different roles. He can choose from the pieces (ie players) that best suits opposition and game state.
abdulaziz1
I wasn’t interested in any Leeds player (apart from possibly Gnonto), but now if we can get him and Adams we might have done a very good business there. Adams might cost more but that one will depend on Dendonker, for me I don’t mind him our best performances came while him starting. But he seems to be going. Both of them won’t cost more than 40m, which is less than Johnson. Then Torres on loan. Won’t be the end of the world. With all this upgrade, we will have spent more that what we did in our first three summers. For me I’m still hopeful we can get Joao Felix towards the end of the season, a loan with buy option would be perfect. But we can’t gamble on that. I know and understand exactly what Emery and Villa are asking of a right back. It's still not natural to Konsa, who I rate highly but isn't the pace merchant you're suggesting. It is not simply being an auxillery centre half on the right side either. Rather a right back who understands the duties of a centre half and has the tactical nous and mobility to cover, but still is essentially, a full back. That's not Konsa. Whenever I saw Konsa play right back he was dragged out of position too often, leaving acres of space outside that was often exploited. Your description of Konsa sounds more like Kyle Walker to me, and that's exactly who I'd go for, or somebody similar.

I'd frame it like this. We should spend a serious chunk of a money on a striker to compete for a starting place, AND have Archer around to challenge, cover for fixture pile ups etc. Watkins, much as I love him, can be wasteful and will need managing in terms of energy. We definitely need another senior option.
mikeyp102
I’m still sure we’ll be in for a RB. I just don’t see Konsa playing there, also hasn’t Emery only moved Foyth a cb to rb? At other clubs I don’t think he’s done it. Think we’ve got a busy few weeks ahead

Surely we’ll want someone to strike fear into the opposition when he’s coming on after 60mins. Archer and Duran aren’t there yet - so it’ll likely be a £40m+ forward I reckon. Or maybe someone in their 30s that would have a cheap transfer fee but hefty wages and will be happy to come off the bench for the majority of games. Jas10
Kind of makes me wonder who Unai is actually after and the level of those players… if he’s not really interested in bringing in players like this (at what seems like good value too) from former clubs… maybe his sights and ambitions are higher… exciting if so…
Jas10
Alvarez would have been such a good signing for us, but once Citeh were in the picture I don’t think he even considered us… There have to be similar targets out there and the “big clubs” can’t sign everyone (other than Chelsea ). Either a past-it player picking up their last pay day, or a £40m+ player to sit on the bench… neither of those prospects fill me with much confidence at all! I get the arguments about not wanting to rely solely on Archer, but at some point he’s got to take the step up, he has to be given a chance and buying someone to play ahead of him but not even being first choice himself will just block his progress. Yes Watkins could break him leg and miss the season, but that could happen to literally any player at any club, at any time, you have to take the risk somewhere down the line - and there are a lot of worse back up strikers in the Prem than a 21 year old who’s averaged a goal or assist every 91 minutes in the championship, and even better for the England U21s. 3
