Southgate at home: "What, they're not playing three DMs and they're winning!? How is that possible"

You mean FOUR DM's? You forgot Harry Kane 🤣

good stuff

one gripe, and it's at all levels now, i don't like how totally faking an injury and calling on physio for a high boot that never made contact is now "intelligent game management". it's like we've not just accepted it, it's being encouraged

i'm all for shithousing, but not cheating

Then I'm sure it would be unsportsman like time wasting if it was the other way round. Just how you would like to see the narrative.

I mean the negative side is we were distinctly second best for nearly 85 minutes. The positive side is the mental fortitude shown in digging out of the hole. Walsh is the best player on the team IMO, absolutely vital workrate.

But surely it isn't 'cheating' in any meaningful way? It's been a side to all the very best teams who actually win things for a very long time, and sort of naive to think gamesmanship doesn't play a hugely important part in sport.

No wonder Spain were pre-tournament favourites, they pressed and passed so well, were clearly technically superior to us, really dominated the 1st half and then overall dominated the 2nd too, and without their two best players, who are both out injured!

Great goals from England though and great mentality and determination to keep fighting.

There's a difference betwee gamesmanship and cheating. My issue is though that commentators used to call it out...now its applauded

Usually depends on the commentary team, if it was an England player then I imagine the BBC or whoever showing the game would be praising it. If was one of them pesky foreign nations they would be slaughtered intensely

Its why Harry Kane gets away with his multiple acts of cheating

Scrappy win for England but sort you have to sometimes get in tournament, fancy them to make final now as will surely play better next month.

My hunch is France are still best all round team in tournament so would have them as favourites.

Will be interesting to see if Jill Scott starts next match. Been a very good servant but mid 30s now so simply can't press like Walsh can.

Ellen White will surely be dropped next for SF.

Not sure what's happened to Lucy Bronze, was arguably best in her position 2-3 years back but dosen't offer much in attack these days.

Personally think England were stronger at 2019 world cup but no US in this so very winnable tournament and feels like England should be making a final by now after three SF.

I thought she was one of our better players. Couldn't get forward as much as usual as Spain had attackers doubling up on her. When they realised that Daly was the weak link on the other flank they switched, and LB was freed up to attack a bit more.

Definitely a match won by astute tactical changes and correct substitutions. The Spanish feller was outthought by Wiegmann.

I really enjoyed watching the game last night - in fact all of the England women's matches in this tournament, yes we played our part in "gamesmanship" for the last 20 mins or so, but that is the nature of the modern game now - England men's team and the Villa have had it done to us for years by the opposition.

What I really enjoyed is that the game was exciting, very few stoppages, not much cheating and no backchat to the officials (I read somewhere that there is a rule that its an instant yellow - is that right? if so bring it into the mans game!). Compare this to the mens national team where its a slow, tedious borefest especially under the current manager. Compare and contrast the England womens manager last night and her use of subs - brave and inspiring.....you will never see those two words in the same sentence with Southgate.

Regards

Derek

Went pretty much how I expected. Spain have been like this all tournament - loads of possession but no real goal threat. Only surprise was it took us so long to get our scoring boots on.

From what I've seen of France (two partial games) they haven't looked all that great, but then that doesn't necessarily mean much I suppose.

I still think we have a good chance of winning this.
