Energy Bills

The thing is that green energy suppliers have not kept their prices down in this current crisis, the energy market is all tied in together, they have to trade energy which has become more expensive.

Maybe one for @Rugeley Villa.  We've got a 1960s semi detached house with bay windows to the front. It's tiled over.

What's the chance of this having any insulation behind it?  I noticed a lot of wind coming through in those windy days last week despite us having new windows fitted.

If I wanted to get the tiles off, insulation put in then tiles back on is that a job for a roofer or for a specialist insulation company?

We literally had this done on an extension that had been put on the back of our kitchen.

The tiled roof on the extension had no insulation in and it was freezing in the winter; I took down the ceiling myself. The builders then insulated it for me (they also bricked up some windows and replaced some others) then plaster-boarded it, plastered it and I painted.

It's now as warm as the rest of the house.

I've cracked. I'm sat here in my big overshirt and I'm bloody freezing so the heating has gone on.

Beanie hat is what you need. If your head is warm (kw) then you'll be fine!

You can sit in your house like a hipster.

£66 went directly into my bank account today (EDF customer).  My smart meter display thingy was going haywire last night (I noticed that it kept on showing "waiting for data") and now I'm waiting for the next bill on 18th October apparently.

Soooo, I bit the bullet and submitted meter readings directly onto the site (I don't trust the automatic smart meter readings).  I don't get it - they're giving me £66 a month back directly into my account but apparently my direct debit payments are only increasing by about £40 :hooray:. I have been overpaying though with a larger direct debit than needed for a while and have cut back on my electricity usage but even so, their estimate suggests that I'll be okay and it is quite surprising.

To say I'm relieved (for now) is an understatement.

EDIT: It will be interesting when the energy payment scheme / reduction to households in the form of direct payments etc ceases mind.

So I'm a little confused by my latest bill

If I am £500 in credit and they are estimating that I am going to be spending £352 on energy between now and Feb, why the hell have my bills gone up...am I missing something?

Look like they haven't actually added your usage in the last 180days. So your not actually £500 in credit. Looks like payments were a bit short covering your last bill but no usage since.

Thing is, I've been on a smart meter since March and I haven't spent any more than £60 a moth since it was installed and I was paying £65, I've since increased it to £85 so how can I be short if I'm constantly paying the correct amount?

They're anticipating you will spend more because a) the standing charges have increased, b) the kwh prices have massively increased and c) people use more energy over winter.

Even if you use the same amount of energy in November as you did in April, the cost will probably be more than double, as the cap has increased massively (although you will be getting £66 a month back in credit for 6 months from October

Sorry, numbers have never been my strong point, but if I was £500 in credit as of July and I know that I have been paying the correct amount towards my bills are they saying that they are estimating that I'll spend the £500 credit with the additional £350 on top of that between now and Feb?

If so that makes sense to me...kind of, like I say, I go full tard when I have to look at anything to do with numbers

Just had a look, no refund yet for me (British Gas), I paid on the 5th October.

I still think it is because there is a usage charge missing. The £49.51 charge will be possibly be from 13th January to when you had the Smart meter put in and then you are missing any charge since you had the smart meter.

Unless I'm looking at it wrong. Is it a prepay smart meter or just a normal one and you're paying by direct debit?

I presume the screenshot is a recent one as its got the October £66 refund on?

Smart meter charges are only added every 6 months but can't really explain why there is nothing showing on yours by now.
