He's being unfairly overhyped in his absence, which will only lead to unfair criticism if doens't live up to that hype upon on is return. Before injury he was in a similar position to Bailey, that is he had to prove this season that he was good enough for a top six side, so it shall be the case for next season

Don't think so. Think it's just the people that have always rated him being excited for his return.

38 games in the Prem last season, 5 goals, 2 assists

I want him back, he's definitely gives us something that we don't currently have, but I think a few of us need to give our head a wobble about how much of a difference he would have made this season.

I mean he would have clearly made a difference playing second striker or LM instead of shoehorning Tielemans, McGinn all over the place, and doing anything to not play Zaniolo.

Was second in the squad for expected goals and assists too.

If I'm reading that right, that's 12 expected goals and assists in 38 games?

For context, same website, Diaby (who, let's be honest, hasn't been great) has 9.9 in 28 games. So he has 10 more games, to get 2 more expected G&A to have a season better than Buendia. And he's been pap this season. https://fbref.com/en/squads/8602292d/Aston-Villa-Stats

To clarify once again, I like Buendia, and I do think he'd offer us something we don't have at the minute, but the train of thought that our season would have been much better with him in seems a bit odd to me.

(Also, fully appreciate last season wasn't as good as this season, didn't win as many, didn't score as many, but that's still not enough to convince me)

Agree, he would’ve been an excellent option to have and likely would’ve helped gain a couple more points on the board but I don’t think he would’ve been a starter.

How many penultimate passes before the assist? Pure assists and goals don't tell the full story.

How much influence on forward play?  How much disruption on defenders with a terrier like attitude?

Buendia was playing a good chunk of last season under Gerrard when we were shit.

This cannot be understated.

I think Buendia did okay but he's a creative player and Villa need someone like Kevin Richardson, who will win the ball in midfield and give it simple.

Creative players are usually trying to do something clever and lack defensive instincts, so they give the ball away, in the wrong part of the pitch.

Tielemans and Zaniolo are both guilty of this.

I don't think they'll ever confirm that sort of info. But anything is possible I guess. I think it's doubtful, but maybe he might come on for 5-10 minutes in a game in the last couple of games 🤷‍♂️

Players are never better than when they're injured. It's a strange phenomenon.

Except possibly when they're youth players who haven't broken into the first team yet. Then they're the solution to all our problems.

My philosophy on players who have had a serious injury is basically to write them off. I dont mean that they'll never come good. I mean that anything more than nothing is a bonus.

We have no idea if he'll be the same player, whether he fits in with Emery's plans, whether he will stay fit. There is so much murkiness to it. Obviously I hope he comes back better but banking on him to do anything or saying what he will do when he's back is at best, complete guesswork, at worst, total nonsense. We have no idea and wont any idea until he's back and fit. Whenever that will be.

Is it confirmed that he won’t feature at all this season?

Back in January Emery said they (Mings and Buendia) wouldn't feature but would be back to help the squad in preseason.

Have to think he'll make the bench if we have any meaningless matches towards the end of the season. Hopefully secured UCL by Liverpool or Palace.
