It is tricky.

You could argue the other way, yes it was legal. But he was a figure that became famous for supporting the NHS, so as an example to the rest of us, it was a terrible decision to take.

But, if it’s legal, it’s legal. Perhaps the spotlight needs to be put on a government that insists its done everything humanly possible to limit the impact of a deadly virus, whilst also allowing foreign holidays.

Chris do you think it was Tom who hopped on Expedia and booked the holiday or was it his primary care giver and entire support bubble that booked it. I feel, but am not sure, that it was the latter. The internet (not you) is raging that a 100 year old man went on holiday with the people that look after him.

I genuinely have no idea who’s idea it was, what links he has with Barbados, what logistics were involved, or how much of a bubble was moved across the world.

Personally, I’m not ‘raging’ about it. But for me, it was a spectacular misstep, given the circumstances of his fame.

Agreed. In no way am I implying that you are even close to rage. His family were quite foolish to do it. from a health perspective and how foreign luxury travel is perceived at the moment.

I absolutely detest this type of argument, or line of thinking. It's far too common.

He was an ordinary (in terms of "fame") elderly man, who decided to raise a few quid for the NHS. A thoroughly good thing. That his efforts became mainstream news and snowballed and gained millions in donations to his just giving page (or whatever he set up) was completely unexpected by him. That others associate him with "supporting the NHS and therefore shouldn't go on holiday because he raised some money" is just bonkers.

It's fine if people think folk going on holiday (for the final time, in his case and he probably knew it would be) is on balance not a great thing to do, then I'm fine with that. But "because I associate him with the NHS" is an awful, awful take.

It's the same as the stuff that anyone with any money, or who lives in a big house, gets thrown at them if they say they vote Labour, for example. Champagne Socialist. I mean you can have a life, which goes well and gets you money or a free holiday and still vote Labour, or raise money for the NHS.

How can you campaign for asylum seeker rights, when you haven't taken I na refugee to live with you?

How can you go on holiday when you are seen as an NHS supporter?

Absolutely mad.

Grrrr.

Sorry @chrisp65 - it's not aimed at you.

No problem @blandy it’s all discussion. Always good to see if an idea written down stands up to scrutiny.

It’s more difficult to separate the two in mind. I’d be more upset with Greta Thurnberg fly tipping than if it was Jeremy Clarkson.

But this is all a side discussion, not the main point about the guy.

On the one hand, boom, I'm up and running! On the other, it's a bit shit.

I happenned to have the misfortune of being in the supermarket doing the weekly shop and all the staff gathered by the door and clapped but only when enough people had their cameras out for Social Media purposes.

The missus was sort of half heartedly clapping for appearances sake, I carried on shopping while she glared at me and muttered something under her breath about a tin of Quality Street (provided courtesy of Capt Tom), I then said quietly that I never ate one of them and they are still there from two weeks before xmas so obviously she wasn't that enamoured either

I was driving home from work and saw a fair few people out clapping .

I think giving him a knighthood was a bit much and talk of a statue is over the top , but equally his family should be proud tonight that he’d touched people to the point they felt he was worth a send off .

I’m not in favour of gongs in principal. But if some chunt in industry can get a knighthood for lining his pockets with loot, and donating to the Tory coffers, then I don’t have a problem with the Captain getting one for helping those other than himself. Still don’t like the whole gong thing though.
